Massachusetts Baseball Ekes Out 5-4 Victory Over Bowling Green In Game One

Kolben recorded three RBI on a home run in the win.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball edged out Bowling Green, 5-4, in game one of its Mid-American Conference series on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.  

UMass improved to 10-19 overall on the season and 6-13 in the MAC, as Bowling Green moved to 15-21 overall and 8-11 in the league.

Anthony Tirado, and Braden Sullivan led the team in hits with two each, followed by Jack Beverly and Ryan Kolben with one hit apiece, which included Kolben's third home run of the season. Five Minutemen scored a run on the day, including Sullivan, Beverly and Sullivan. Kolben led the team in RBI with three, as Vance Bonior and Matt Travisano both had one RBI.

After three scoreless innings, Massachusetts got on the board first in the fourth. Ty Fox led off with a walk, followed by Reece McCarthy getting on first after being hit by a pitch. Sullivan then had a bunt single to load the bases. Fox scored on a sacrifice fly from Bonior, before Beverly was walked in his at-bat. Another sacrifice fly from Travisano helped McCarthy cross the dish and make it a 2-0 contest. Kolben followed that with his third home run of the season to deep left field, scoring Sullivan and Beverly to take a 5-0 lead.  

In the fifth, Bowling Green pushed across three runs to make it a 5-3 game. The Falcons scored another run in the top of the eighth to get within one at 5-4.

The Minutemen held off Bowling Green in the final frame to come away with the 5-4 victory.

Callen Powers (4-3) earned the win for UMass, tossing seven complete innings and giving up only three runs on seven hits, three walks and striking out six. Jack Niedringhaus received his fourth save of the year, allowing no runs, one hits, walking one and dealing three strikeouts.

Carrson Sova (1-3) took the loss for Bowling Green, allowing five runs, four hits, walking three and striking out six in five innings of work.

Massachusetts and Bowling Green face off in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18, with first pitch at 12 p.m. for the first game of the twin bill. Game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
