Baseball Falls To Harvard, 17-12, In Beanpot Consolation

Three Minutemen had three hits each on the day.

BRIGHTON, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 17-12, to Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation at Harrington Athletics Village on Tuesday afternoon.

UMass moved to 9-19 overall on the season, as Harvard improved to 7-19 overall.

Anthony Tirado, Ty Fox and Vance Bonior registered three hits each, with Gavin O'Brien and Sam Hill tallying two apiece. Tirado and Hill scored three runs each, followed by Bonior with two. Fox and Hill also posted three RBI, as O'Brien and Braden Sullivan recorded two apiece.

Harvard scored four runs in the opening frame and three in the second inning to take an early 7-0 lead.

In the third, Massachusetts got on the board, as Hill started off the frame with a hit by pitch. Tirado then followed with a single to left field, before O'Brien singled to center field to load the bases. Fox hit a two-run single to score Hill and Tirado to make it a 7-2 game.

The Minutemen put up a five spot in the fourth inning to knot the game up at 7-7. Bonior started off the scoring as he touched the dish on an RBI single from Hill, before Briggs crossed the plate on a wild pitch. A passed ball then helped Hill come home to get UMass back within two. Sullivan hit a two-run single to center field to drive home Fox and Tirado.

The Crimson reclaimed the lead at 11-7 in the fifth, after tacking on four runs, which included a three-run home run. Harvard added another run in the seventh to lead, 12-7.

The eighth inning saw both teams tally five runs each. Harvard took a 17-7 advantage in the top half of the frame, before UMass took back all five runs. Dean Gobeil and Bonior crossed home plate on a single through the left side by Hill, followed by Hill and Tirado coming home on O'Brien's double down the left field line. A single to right field by Fox aided O'Brien across the dish to make it a 17-12 contest.

Each team's defense was able to hold off any more runs, as Harvard went on to win, 17-12.

Lorcan Lee (0-3) took the loss for Massachusetts, allowing five runs, five hits, three walks and striking out four in 3.2 innings of work.

Daniel Sams (1-1) had the win for Harvard, giving up no runs, one hit, a walk and dealing one strike out in 2.2 innings.

Massachusetts returns to MACtion, hosting Bowling Green for a three-game series on Friday, April 17 through Sunday, April 19. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday with Saturday's game starting at 1 p.m. The series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m. All three contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
