Baseball Falls In Game Three At Western Michigan

Minutemen set to host Quinnpiac for a midweek contest on Tuesday, March 31, at 3 p.m.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 13-4 decision to Western Michigan on Sunday morning at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.

UMass moved to 5-14 overall on the season and 1-11 in the Mid-American Conference, while Western Michigan improved to 13-12 overall and 9-3 in the MAC.    

Ty Fox and Reece McCarthy tallied two hits apiece, while both adding an RBI. Anthony Tirado, Gavin O'Brien, Will Briggs, Marc Willi and Dean Gobeil each recorded a hit , which included a double from both O'Brien and Gobeil. Tirado led with two RBI, as Tirado, O'Brien, Braden Sullivan and Gobeil scored a run for the Minutemen.

O'Brien doubled to left field with one out, before advancing to third on a wild pitch in the top of the first. Fox then singled to center field to drive home O'Brien and give UMass a 1-0 lead.

Western Michigan tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the opening frame with an RBI single. The Broncos scored four runs in the  second to claim a 5-1 lead, before tacking on two more in the third to extend their lead to 7-1.

Western Michigan pulled ahead, 13-1, with a six-run fourth inning.

UMass put up three runs in the seventh, but the Broncos held on to their lead to take the series, 13-4.

Justin Masteralexis (0-3) had the loss for Massachusetts, letting up five runs on as many hits, walking three and striking out two in two complete innings.

Ricky Kidd (3-1) earned the win for Western Michigan, allowing only one run on four hits, walking two and dealing four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Massachusetts hosts Quinnipiac on Tuesday, March 31, at 3 p.m. on ESPN+, at Earl Lorden Field.
