Baseball Drops Midweek Contest To Quinnipiac

Ty Fox recorded his third home run of the season in the loss.
UMass moved to 5-15 overall on the season and 1-11 in the Mid-American Conference, while Quinnipiac improved to 12-14 on the year.
Ty Fox went 3-for-5 on the day with his third home run of the year, while adding two runs and two RBI. Gavin O'Brien, Will Briggs and Reece McCarthy all posted two hits each, which included a double from Briggs, while Anthony Tirado and Ryan Kolben had one hit apiece. In addition to Fox, four other Minutemen scored. McCarthy also added two RBI with O'Brien registering one RBI on the day.
Quinnipiac took an early 4-0 lead in the opening frame, which included a two-run single to start off the scoring. The Bobcats added to their lead with a four spot in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
Quinnipiac continued to pull ahead in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead after scoring three runs.
The Minutemen got on the board in the sixth with a leadoff home run from Fox, hitting it deep over the right field fence to make it an 11-1 contest. It marked his third long ball of the season.
The Bobcats answered with a leadoff homer of their own to extend to a 12-1 lead in the top of the seventh, before adding two more runs to make it a 14-1 game.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Dean Gobeil walked with one out, before stealing second. After Tirado walked, O'Brien singled to right field to drive home Gobeil to make it a 14-2 game. Fox then singled through the left side to help Tirado across the plate. O'Brien scored on a passed ball, followed by an RBI single to left center field for McCarthy bringing the score to 14-5.
Quinnipiac put up another run with a leadoff home run to pull ahead 15-5, before tacking on two more runs to go-ahead 17-5 in the top of the final frame.
UMass notched a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by McCarthy to score Briggs to make it a 17-6 game.
Lorcan Lee (0-1) had the loss for Massachusetts, giving up six runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in two complete innings.
Jacob Belecky (1-1) earned the win for Quinnipiac, allowing only two hits with no runs, no walks and dealing four strikeouts in three innings of work.
Massachusetts sets to welcome Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois for a three-game series on Thursday, April 2, through Saturday, April 4. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. on Thursday, before a 1 p.m. start on Friday. Saturday's game will begin at 12 p.m.
