Massachusetts Baseball Falls To Akron In Game One

The Minutemen and Zips face off for game two on Saturday, March 14, at 1 p.m.

AKRON, Ohio - University of Massachusetts baseball fell to Akron, 12-2, in game one of the weekend series on Friday afternoon at Skeeles Field.

UMass moved to 4-6 overall on the season and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference, while Akron improved to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in the league.  

Ty Fox and Marc Willi led the team in hits with two each, while both registering an RBI. Fox recorded a double on the day. Gavin O'Brien and Reece McCarthy scored the two runs for the Minutemen.

Akron scored two runs in the first inning on two RBI singles to take an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third, the Minutemen cut the deficit in half, making it a 2-1 game. With one out, O'Brien reached first on an error, before advancing to second. Fox, then singled to center field, sending O'Brien home.  

The Zips put up five runs in the bottom of the third, which included an RBI double, to extend their lead to 7-1.  
Reece McCarthy led off the fourth with a walk, before stealing second. Willi singled through the left side to help McCarthy across the plate and make it a 7-2 contest.

Akron posted four more runs in the sixth frame to pull ahead, 11-2. The Zips scored another to win 12-2 in the seventh.

Callen Powers (1-2) had the loss for Massachusetts, tossing five complete innings with seven runs, eight hits, a walk and six strikeouts.   
 

Josiah Ross (2-1) for Akron earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits, walking four and striking out four in four complete innings.

UMass and Akron set for game two of the series on Saturday, March 14, at 1 p.m., at Skeeles Field.
