Minutemen Outlasted By Bowling Green In Overtime

Leonardo Bettiol recorded a career-high 32 points and added a game-best 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.
AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts men's basketball fell to Bowling Green in overtime, 101-100, on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center (2,574).
With five seconds left in regulation, Bowling Green's Javontae Campbell hit three free throws to force overtime, and Campbell's 47 points proved too much to overcome.
UMass Graduate student forward Leonard Bettiol tallied 32 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Bettiol went 11-for-13 from the field and 10-of-14 from the free throw line en route to his career-high point total.
K'Jei Parker was 6-for-9 from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, while going unblemished from the charity stripe to contribute 21 points. Daniel Hankins-Sanford (14) and Marcus Banks Jr. (11), also reached double figures. Danny Carbuccia dished out a game-best nine assists on the afternoon.
Campbell led Bowling Green with 47 points and eight assists. Mayar Wol (21), Javon Ruffin (10) and Josiah Shackelford (10) also reached double digits for the Falcons. Sam Towns came down with a team-best eight boards and added three steals, along with Wol.
How It Happened
- Danny Carbuccia, Leonardo Bettiol, Marcus Banks Jr., Daniel Hankins-Sanford and Jayden Ndjigue started for the Minutemen.
- Banks Jr. opened the scoring for the Minutemen with a pair of threes for a 6-3 lead.
- A Carbuccia driving layup gave UMass a 13-10 lead with 13 minutes left in the half.
- Bettiol made a move down low and converted the layup for a 15-14 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half.
- Bettiol then made back-to-back layups followed by a Banks Jr. jumper to restore the UMass lead, 27-26, at the four-minute mark.
- A Parker three closed out the scoring in the half for UMass, and the teams went to the locker room tied at 34-34.
- Parker hit another three to cut it to a 46-45 Bowling Green lead at 15:56 of the second half.
- Parker and Hankins-Sanford hit back-to-back threes to pull the Minutemen within three, 58-55, with 12 minutes left.
- Hankins-Sanford completed a tough and-one to move the score to 62-61 in favor of the Falcons with 8:49 left.
- On a nice feed from Wimbley Jr., Bettiol gave the Minutemen the 63-62 lead the next trip down the floor.
- A pair of Hankins-Sanford free throws moved it to 68-62 UMass with six minutes left.
- A Bowling Green three made it 75-72 with under two minutes to play.
- A Banks Jr. layup after the Minutemen beat the press then made it 77-72.
- The Falcons hit another three with 35 seconds left to cut the UMass lead to 81-78
- Banks hit a free throw, but the Falcons converted an and-one, 82-81 with 25 seconds left.
- Hankins-Sanford's free throws pushed it to 84-81 but he was then called for a goaltend on the other end.
- With UMass leading 86-83, Campbell knocked down three free throws for the Falcons to force overtime.
- Bowling Green then edged the Minutemen out in overtime, with both teams battling foul trouble.
- Mayar Wol made two of his three shots in OT to lead the Falcons.
- Trailing 101-98, Carbuccia had a game-tying three rim out with a second left – Bettiol's put back went in as time expired for the final 101-100 score.
