January 02, 2026 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – Six different goal scorers helped Massachusetts hockey skate to a 7-0 shutout of Simon Fraser as the Minutemen returned from the holiday break with an exhibition matchup at the Mullins Center on Friday. Following regulation, the teams played a scoreless overtime period and a shootout, which UMass won, 2-1 in seven rounds.
The Minutemen opened the scoring 12:35 into the first period with senior Lucas Ölvestad sending the puck ahead to freshman Elias Zimmerman on the rush and Zimmerman's shot hit a defender in front to deflect home.
UMass doubled its lead moments later when junior Matthew Wilde put back a rebound from freshmen Landon Nycz and Coleson Hanrahan at 14:16.
Just 1:57 into the second, junior Bo Cosman fired a wrister past Jesse Makaj from the top of the offensive zone after sophomore Daniel Jencko and Nycz won the puck in the neutral zone.
The Minutemen's special teams units were on display in the final two frames, beginning with sophomore's shorthanded tally from junior Nick VanTassell into an open net on an odd-man rush at 10:25.
Junior Cam O'Neill then potted power-play goals at 14:04 of the second and 6:10 into the third. Ölvestad finished a three-point night with the secondary helper on O'Neill's first marker and the primary on his second.
The seventh and final goal came at the 8:43 mark with Cam Dunn connecting with a pass from Wilde as the net came off its moorings. The play went to official review, but was confirmed when it was determined that the Red Leafs dislodged their own net.
Freshman Jack Galanek converted on the first shootout goal attempt and Simon Fraser extended things with a goal by Max Potvin in the third round. Shooters for both squads came up empty until Wilde potted the deciding tally in round seven.
In addition to Ölvestad (3a), and O'Neill (2g), Nycz (2a), DeAngelo (1g, 1a), Dell'Elce (2a) and Wilde (1g, 1a) all had multi-point nights.
Juniors Michael Hrabal and Jackson Irving split time in net and had eight and five saves, respectively. Makaj made 20 stops in the first two periods and Steven Sytsma turned aside 14 shots in the third for the Red Leafs.
UMass will begin its second half action next Friday, January 9, when the squad will play host to No. 19 Boston University at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
