Massachusetts Women’s Soccer Draws Dartmouth, 2-2

HANOVER, N.H. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer battled to a 2-2 draw with Dartmouth at Burnham Field on Thursday night.
The Minutewomen move to 2-1-1 overall, while the Big Green move to 2-0-1 on the year.
Freshman Kaila Steen scored her first collegiate goal, while sophomore Peyton Costello notched her first goal as a Minutewoman.
Dartmouth scored first early, as Lykke Ihrfelt kicked the ball in the high right side of the net at the 19:15 mark. In the 32nd minute, UMass was awarded a corner kick. Morgan Bellamy kicked the ball out of the box with Steen coming up, before Steen sailed it through traffic into the lower left corner of the net to tie the game up at 1-1.
Costello put the Minutewomen on top, 2-1, with a floater to the lower left corner of the goal at the 40:32 mark. Steen corralled the ball and sent it over to Annie McCaffrey. With a Dartmouth defender threatening, Costello moved into open space to take the pass from McCaffrey. Costello took a left-footed shot from about 30 feet out that floated high over the Big Green goalkeeper, finding the lower left side of the net.
In the second half, Dartmouth scored the equalizer at the 56:27 mark. Stephanie Lathrop crossed the ball in front of the net, allowing Lourdes Lauterborn to head it down into the lower left corner to make it a 2-2 game. The two teams battled on the field in the final minutes, ultimately, tying 2-2 to end the contest.
Dartmouth outshot Massachusetts, 20-9, including 9-6 on goal. The Big Green also had the slight advantage in corners, 6-5.
Costello tallied three shots, including two on goal, to lead the team. Bellamy and Caroline Dickson followed behind with two shits apiece with one on goal.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Leah Nisenfeld pushed aside seven shots and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of play. Paige Knoth played in net for the full 90 minutes, allowing two goals and stopping four shots.
Massachusetts continues on the road with a trip to Lowell, Massachusetts, to take on UMass Lowell for the Kennedy Cup, on Sunday, August 31, at 6 p.m.
