Massachusetts Baseball Ekes Out 8-6 Victory Over Siena

McCarthy tallied a career-best four hits and four RBI, while Blanchard and Aceto earn first collegiate win and save, respectively.
JJ Blanchard registered his first collegiate win, while Michael Aceto earned his first career save in the triumph.
UMass improved to 13-26-1 overall on the season, while Siena moved to 16-26 overall on the year.
McCarthy went a career-best 4-for-4 on the day, including a double, while adding a run and a career-high four RBI to lead the team. Gavin O'Brien followed with two hits, with Anthony Tirado, Jared Muñoz, Carter Hanson, Ryan Kolben and Jack Peters with Tirado and O'Brien tallying doubles on the day. O'Brien tallied a team-leading three runs. Tirado, Hanson and O'Brien contributed an RBI.
UMass got on the board first in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Marc Willi started off the bottom of the innings reaching base on an error, before Kolben singled to third base. A sacrifice bunt from Kyle Hoog put Willi and Kolben on third and second, respectively. O'Brien hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Willi to touch the plate.
Siena had a slight 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run double to right center field. The Minutemen took back the two runs in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, McCarthy singled to right center field, driving home Kolben and O'Brien to claim a 3-2 lead.
A solo home run for the Saints knotted up the game in the fifth at 3-3, before tacking on three more with a three RBI double to reclaim the lead at 6-3.
Massachusetts put up four runs in the sixth O'Brien led off with a double to center field, before Peters hit a single. O'Brien scored from third on a balk to make it a 6-4 game. Tirado registered a double to center field as Peters came across the dish, making it a 6-5 contest. After Tirado stole third, he touched home plate on McCarthy's third double of the season to knot the game up at six apiece. With two outs, McCarthy advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hanson, then, singled to center field to drive home McCarthy and take back the lead at 7-6.
The Minutemen added to their lead, 8-6, in the seventh with a two-out, RBI single from McCarthy to score O'Brien. UMass' defense held off the Saints in the final frame to secure an 8-6 victory.
JJ Blanchard (1-0) received his first collegiate win for UMass, pitching two complete innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two strikeouts. Michael Aceto earned his first career save, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and striking out two in one inning of work. MarkAnthony Glickman (2-2) took the loss for Siena, allowing one run on two hits and walking one with no strikeouts in 0.1 innings.
Massachusetts hits the road for a three-game A-10 series against Saint Louis in Saint Louis, Missouri, on Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m., before Saturday's contest begins at 3 p.m. The series finale is set for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
