Offense Comes Alive Early As Baseball Defeats George Washington, 16-3

An eight-run first inning, highlighted by Willi’s first career grand slam, aids the Minutemen to a victory
UMass improved to 12-25-1 overall on the season and 6-15 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Washington moved to 24-19 overall with an 11-10 league record.
Anthony Tirado strung together three hits, followed closely behind by Carter Hanson with two. Six other players tallied one hit each, which included Willi's fifth home run and Michael Toth's second of the season. Jack Beverly added his sixth double on the day. Tirado and Toth both scored three runs, while Matt Travisano, Willi and Reece McCarthy plated two apiece. Hanson and Willi batted in four runs each, matching a career-high for Hanson and marking a career-best for Willi. Beverly added two RBI on the afternoon.
UMass' offense dominated the opening frame, scoring eight runs. Back-to-back bases loaded walks started off the scoring, before Willi hit a grand slam to right center field to give the Minutemen a 6-0 lead. An RBI single from Sam Hill and Hanson added to Massachusetts' total to lead 8-0.
The Minutemen kept the bats hot, tallying four more to take a 12-0 lead in the third. Toth led off with a solo long ball, before a two-run single from Hanson pushed McCarthy and Tirado across the dish. A throwing error allowed Travisano to score from third.
Three more runs came across for UMass in the fourth on two bases loaded walks and an RBI single to center field from Travisano, extending Massachusetts' lead to 15-0.
George Washington got on the board in the fifth with a two-run homer, but UMass took a run back in the sixth with an RBI double from Beverly down the left field line to pull the Minutemen ahead, 16-2.
The Revolutionaries tacked on one more run in the seventh, but Massachusetts held on for a 16-3 victory on the day.
Sam Belliveau (1-4) received the win for UMass, allowing three runs on seven hits, three walks and striking out two in a complete seven inning contest. Graham Jeffries (1-2) took the loss for George Washington, giving up eight runs on three hits and walking two with no strikeouts in 0.2 innings of work.
Massachusetts heads to Fenway Park to take on Boston College in the Baseball Beanpot Consolation game on Tuesday, April 29, at 4 p.m.
