Massachusetts Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Navy

The Minutemen took game one, 3-2, before the Midshipmen claimed a 7-6 win in game two.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball split the twin bill with Navy on Saturday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. UMass claimed a 3-2 victory in game one of the day, before Navy took game two, 7-6.
UMass moved to 5-4-1 on the year, while Navy holds a 4-9 overall record.
Carter Hanson recorded two home runs on the afternoon, tallying one in each contest, to mark his third and fourth of the season for the senior.
The two teams play the final game of the series on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m.
Game 1
Massachusetts 3, Navy 2 (7 Innings)
In a pitchers' duel, Callen Powers recorded his second winning decision of the year after allowing only two runs on nine hits, no walks and dealing a career-best seven strikeouts in six complete innings. Adam Merritt earned his first career save, striking out two with no hits, no runs and no walks to close out the seventh and final inning of game one of the doubleheader.
Ryan Kolben totaled a team-high two hits, followed by Anthony Tirado, Braden Sullivan and Hanson with one each, which included Hanson's third home run of the year. Kolben and Sullivan registered their fourth and third doubles, respectively, of the season. Sullivan, Hanson and Kyle Hoog scored the three runs for the Minutemen, while Hanson tallied a team-leading two RBI.
UMass took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame. After a one-out double from Sullivan, Hanson stepped up and hit a two-out, two-run homer to right center field, marking his third of the season.
Navy plated a run in the second inning on an RBI single after a one-out triple to make it a 2-1 contest. The Midshipmen knotted up the game at two apiece with a run scored on a double down the left field line.
Marc Willi led off the fifth with a walk, with Hoog pinch running for Willi. Hoog advanced two second on a sacrifice bunt from Jack Peters, before moving to third on a ground out. Navy's third baseman had a fielding error with Sullivan reaching first and Hoog coming home to score, as Massachusetts reclaimed the lead at 3-2.
The Minutemen defense held off the Midshipmen in the final two innings to earn the 3-2 triumph.
Tyler Grenn of Navy had the loss, tossing a complete game with three runs on five hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
Game 2
Navy 7, Massachusetts 6 (7 Innings)
Six Minutemen contributed a hit, as Hanson and Willi recorded home runs. It marked the second homer of the day for Hanson and fourth of the year, while Willi registered his first of the season. Kolben and Mitchell Schroeder hit a double each, with it being Kolben's fifth of the year and second of the doubleheader, and Schroeder's first with the Maroon and White.
Tirado and Hanson plated two runs apiece with Reece McCarthy and Willi totaling one each. Hanson also had a game-high two RBI, as Kolben and Willi both followed with one.
After one strike, Tirado saw four straight balls to take his place on first to start the first inning. With two outs, Hanson blasted the ball over the right center field wall for his second home run of the day and fourth of the season, bringing home Tirado to make it a 2-0 game.
Navy cut the deficit in half with a run scored in the bottom half of the inning. The Midshipmen tacked on another run after stealing home to tie up the game at 2-2 in the third frame.
After Jack Beverly led off reaching first on a fielding error in the top of the fourth, before advancing to second on a wild pitch, Hanson took first base with a full count walk. A fielder's choice allowed Jared Muñoz to get on base as Hanson moved to second. Kolben registered his second double of the day, and fifth of the year to bring home Hanson to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning, an RBI double and RBI single helped Navy take the lead. The Midshipmen added another run with a bases loaded walk to pull ahead, 5-3.
Massachusetts plated two runs in the fifth to bring the game to its third tie of the day at 5-5. Schroeder doubled to right center field to lead off the frame with McCarthy coming into the game as a pinch runner. Tirado followed with a walk, before Sullivan laid down a bunt single, advancing McCarthy and Tirado into scoring position. Hanson stepped up to the plate and struck out, but the strikeout pitch got away from the Navy catcher, allowing McCarthy and Tirado to cross the dish on a wild pitch.
A lead off solo home run in the top of the seventh from Willi, marking his first of the year, aided the Minutemen to a 6-5 lead. Navy was able to push across two runs in the bottom half of the inning to come away with a walk-off 7-6 win.
Bobby McDonough took the loss for Massachusetts, allowing two runs on three hits, no walks and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work. Landon Kruer had the win for Navy after tossing three complete innings with one run, three hits, a walk and four strikeouts.
UMass moved to 5-4-1 on the year, while Navy holds a 4-9 overall record.
