Mitchell Schroeder registers first home run as a Minuteman in the triumph.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball claims a 6-3 victory over UAlbany in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Graduate student Mitchell Schroeder aided UMass to take the lead in the eighth with his first homer as a Minuteman.
UMass improved to 8-10-1 overall on the season, while UAlbany moved to 8-11 on the year.
Anthony Tirado led the team with two hits, with six Minutemen registering one hit each. Schroeder recorded his first home run with the Maroon and White, while Tirado, Carter Hanson, Marc Willi and Gavin O'Brien had a double on the afternoon. Jack Beverly tallied a team-leading two runs, followed by Schroeder, Zack Zaetta, Jack Peters and Michael Toth all with one run apiece. Tirado and Schroeder totaled a team-best two RBI each on the day.
UMass scored first in the fourth to lead 1-0. Beverly started off the frame with a single up the middle, before advancing to second on a passed ball. A ground out from Hanson aided Beverly into scoring position. With Willi at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Beverly to cross the dish.
UAlbany took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer to center field. In the bottom of the inning, the Minutemen knotted up the game at 2-2. Willi led off with a double down the left field line, as Zaetta entered as the pinch runner for Willi. A sacrifice fly from Toth advanced Zaetta to third, before Zaetta slid across home plate on a wild pitch.
In the eighth, Beverly took his place on first after being hit by a pitch. With one out, Schroeder recorded a two-run home run, marking his first as a Minuteman, to score Beverly to give UMass a 4-2 lead. Back-to-back hit by pitches put Peters and Toth on second and first, respectively. Tirado hit a two-out, two-run double to right field, driving in Peters and Toth to extend Massachusetts lead to 6-2.
The Great Danes tacked on a run in the ninth on an RBI single, but the UMass was able to record the third out keeping the bases loaded to win 6-3 on the day.
Jack Levine (2-1) received the win for Massachusetts, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two in two complete innings of work. Sam Belliveau started on the mound for UMass, giving up no runs, one hit, walking two and striking out three in three innings, while Jason Blanchard entered for two innings with no runs, two hits, two walks and his first two collegiate strikeouts.
Luke Boule (0-1) tossed 1.1 innings, giving up four runs on as many hits, no walks and two strikeouts to take the loss for UAlbany.
Massachusetts welcomes Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island for a three-game series, starting on Friday, March 28 through Sunday, March 30 on ESPN+. First pitch at Earl Lorden is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, with Saturday's contest beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday's finale will start at 1 p.m.
