Massachusetts Baseball Drops Game One At Davidson, 9-3

March 14, 2025 | Baseball

The Minutemen and Wildcats prepare for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15, starting at 1 p.m.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped game one at Davidson, 9-3, in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.

UMass moved to 5-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the A-10, while Davidson improved to 5-11 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Seven Minutemen tallied a hit, including Braden Sullivan and Jared Muñoz registering a double each on the day. Mitchell Schroeder, Muñoz and Matt Travisano scored one run apiece for UMass, while Anthony Tirado, Marc Willi and Travisano all had one RBI.

After a scoreless first frame, Massachusetts got on the board first for the eighth straight contest. Schroeder singled to the shortstop, before Muñoz was walked. Willi singled through the right side, as Schroeder ran home to score and give UMass the 1-0 lead.

The Minutemen added another run to their total in the top of the fifth to pull ahead, 2-0. Travisano led off the inning with a walk to stand at first. Travisano advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jack Peters, before heading home on a single up the middle from Tirado.

Davidson cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI bases-loaded walk. A two-run single allowed two Wildcats to cross the plate, before a throwing error helped Davidson score another run to take a 4-2 lead.

The Wildcats led off their half of the sixth with a solo home run to push ahead, 5-2. A three-run homer in the seventh for Davidson extended its lead to 8-2. Davidson added another run to its total in the eighth on an RBI single.

Muñoz scored on a ground out by Travisano in the final inning, but the Minutemen offense could not get anything going, as Davidson came away with the 9-3 win.

Robbie O'Connor (1-2) took the loss for UMass, tossing five complete innings with four runs on three hits, five walks and five strikeouts on the afternoon. Wilson Perkins (2-3) had the win for Davidson, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out seven in 6.2 innings of work. Jacob Vokal earned the save for the Wildcats, going 2.1 innings with one run on two hits and two strikeouts.
