Massachusetts Hockey Blanks #12/11 Northeastern, 2-0, To Close Out Semester

December 07, 2025 | Hockey

BOSTON – Junior goaltender Jackson Irving made 37 saves to backstop Massachusetts hockey to a 2-0 win over #12/11 Northeastern on Sunday in a non-conference matchup at Matthews Arena. With the win, the Minutemen wrap up the semester at 9-9-0, while the Huskies drop to 10-5-0 overall.

"I thought we deserved better last night in the game, and I give credit to the players, we made some small adjustments, came out and played a really solid game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "It was a bit of a chess match. Both teams just getting the puck deep, trying to earn pucks. There wasn't a ton of offense, but when there was, Jackson Irving was phenomenal. He was difference in the game. We've been playing better lately, not getting the results. But tonight, we did, and I'm happy for the group that they get to go into Christmas feeling good about our team."

The first period set a physical tone with more hits than shots through the first 10 minutes of action. Each team had a power play in the frame, with UMass generating several chances but no shots on target during the man advantage.

Then just 33 seconds into the second period, sophomore Mikey DeAngelo put the Minutemen on the board. DeAngelo and freshman Lukáš Klecka won a puck battle near the team's offensive blueline and then skated into the zone with a give-and-go that DeAngleo finished from Klecka with a shot from the right faceoff dot fluttering into the top left corner of the net.

Northeastern responded by putting up 31 shots in the remainder of the contest, which included eight on the power play, to UMass' eight total shots after going up 1-0.

With the Huskies net empty, freshman Václav Nestrašil flung a puck down the ice for his 10th goal of the season after classmate Jack Galanek won the defensive zone faceoff.

Northeastern finished with 37 shots to UMass' 16 and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-1.

UMass will be idle until, Friday, January 2, when the squad plays host to Simon Fraser for an exhibition game at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
