#12/11 Northeastern Nips Massachusetts Hockey 3-2 In OT

December 06, 2025 | Hockey

BOSTON – University of Massachusetts hockey rallied to score twice with less than six minutes to go in the third period to tie things at 2-2, but #12/11 Northeastern went on to take the matchup in overtime, 3-2, at Matthews Arena on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 8-9-0 overall and 2-6-0 in Hockey East, while the Huskies improve to 10-4-0 and 5-3-0 in league action.

"I was very, very happy with the way our team played tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we controlled the second half of the game then some strange events there. Nick VanTassell breaks his stick on the penalty kill and then Francesco Dell'Elce loses a tire. Those two things, to me, decided the game, but I was very happy with the way our guys played."

Northeastern opened the scoring 6:08 into the first period. With just two seconds remaining on the first power-play opportunity of the night, Jacob Mathieu redirected home a Vinny Borgesi slap shot for the score. Joe Connor collected the secondary helper.

UMass had an extended 5-on-3 opportunity midway through the frame, which resulted in sustained possession and several scoring chances, but the squad was unable to solve goaltender Lawton Zacher during the two-man advantage.

The Minutemen had another grade A opportunity late in the second period, but sophomore Cam Dunn was denied on the breakaway by Zacher, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the Huskies heading into the third.

Northeastern added another power-play goal at the 11:25 mark of the third period. Borgesi collected a pass from Dylan Hryckowian and Connor and fired a shot from the top of the umbrella through traffic that found its way past goaltender Michael Hrabal.

Dunn persisted with the offensive attack and was rewarded with his first collegiate goal, 14:14 into the third. Sophomore Charlie Lieberman received a pass from VanTassell and was hauled down on his way to the net. Dunn picked up the loose puck in the slot and stickhandled around Zacher to put UMass on the board.

Then will Hrabal on the bench for the extra skater, the Minutemen tied the score at 2-2 with under two minutes to play in regulation. Dell'Elce's initial shot off a feed from sophomore Larry Keenan was blocked, but the puck came to Jack Musa to finish the rebound at 18:19.

Northeastern went on to net the overtime game winner, however, with just 1:16 remaining in the extra frame. Dylan Finlay and Mathieu set up Hryckowian for a rush up the ice and Hryckowian bounced the puck off the half wall to create space and snapped it past Hrabal from the left faceoff circle.

The Huskies ended the night with a 27-24 shot advantage and went 2-for-5 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-3.

Hrabal had 24 saves for the Minutemen and Zacher turned aside 22 for Northeastern.

The teams will be back in action, tomorrow, Sunday, December 7, for a non-conference matchup that will air on NESN at 5:30 p.m.
