#13/12 Massachusetts Hockey Falls To #6 Maine, 6-2

November 06, 2025 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 13/12 Massachusetts hockey was unable to overcome a 3-0 deficit, falling to No. 6 Maine, 6-2 on Thursday night at the Mullins Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 6-4-0 on the season 0-2-0 in Hockey East, while the Black Bears improve to 6-2-1, 3-0-0 in league action.

"It's probably as poorly as we've played in my 10 years here at UMass," said head coach Greg Carvel. "I need to figure out why we don't come out ready to compete in gamed and thought I we were pretty well prepared. We knew what Maine was going to bring and that's what they do. We just had no compete tonight, no pushback. I feel bad, Jackson Irving gets a chance to play, and we didn't play very well in front of him. But he's about the only guy tonight that came ready to play and kept us in it for a little while. We left him out to dry too often. Very poor showing by our team."

Maine opened the scoring with two goals late in the first period. At the 18:54 mark, Owen Fowler forced a turnover and sent Josh Nadeau off to the races on a shorthanded breakaway for the score. Fowler than set up a Brandon Holt tally off an offensive zone faceoff at 19:10.

Just 28 seconds into the second period, the Black Bears converted on the 5-on-3 power play with Justin Poirier putting back a rebound from Nadeau and Max Scott.

UMass took one of the goals back at the 6:01 mark. Senior Owen Murray started a rush out of the defensive zone and junior Nick VanTassell finished off a one-timer from sophomore Larry Keenan.

However, Maine regained its three-goal cushion before the intermission. Nadeau finished off a feed from Brandon Chabrier in the slot, 17:54 into the frame. He then completed his hat trick on the power play at the 9:04 mark of the third period.

Freshman Jack Galanek redirected a pass from junior Jack Musa and Václav Nestrašil on the rush for his first collegiate goal, 10:48 into the third.

The Black Bears then capped the scoring with a tally from Miguel Marques at the doorstep, set up by Fowler and Frank Djurasevic at 15:24.

Maine finished the night with a 54-16 advantage in shots and went 2-for-4 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-4.

Goaltender Jackson Irving made a career high 48 saves for the Minutemen and Albin Boija turned aside in net 14 for the Black Bears.

The teams will close out their two-game set tomorrow, November 7, at 7 p.m. on NESN.
