#13/12 Massachusetts Hockey Bounces Back, Blanks #6 Maine, 4-0

November 07, 2025 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 13/12 University of Massachusetts hockey used a pair of power-play goals to help the squad secure a split in its series with No. 6 Maine, blanking the Black Bears, 4-0 on Friday at the Mullins Center. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 7-4-0 on the season, 1-2-0 in Hockey East, while Maine falls to 6-3-1, 3-1-0 in league action.

"That was the response we needed," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Much different team tonight. We did some soul searching as a group and guys responded very well. I'm very happy for Jackson Irving. He had a hell of a weekend. I know he gave up some goals last night, but they probably should have scored a lot more last night. I'm we could hold on and get the shout out for him. He's an outstanding young man and you rarely see the locker room that excited and happy for an individual."

UMass opened the scoring 10:29 into the first with the man advantage as freshman Jack Galanek won a faceoff back to classmate Václav Nestrašil who fed sophomore Francesco Dell'Elce for a one-timer at the top of the right faceoff circle.

The Minutemen doubled their lead on a power play at the 9:15 mark of the second period. Dell'Elce found sophomore Daniel Jencko with a cross-ice pass for the quick strike from the right faceoff dot. Junior Jack Musa collected the secondary assist on the play.

Moments later, 14:50 into the frame, UMass pushed its lead to 3-0. Junior Nick VanTassell picked up a pass from classmate Matthew Wilde at the offensive blue line and fired off a shot that was turned aside. However, senior Lucas Ölvestad was trailing the play and went bar down for his first tally of the season.

The Minutemen completed the scoring at the 17:02 mark of the second period. Mikey DeAngelo and VanTassell set up Jencko for an empty netter and his second goal of the night.

Maine edged UMass in shots, 38-35, but the Minutemen won the special teams' battle, going 2-for-7 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Junior Jackson Irving made 38 saves en route to his second career shutout, while Albin Boija made 31 stops for the Black Bears.
