Four-Goal Third Period Carries #16 Providence Past Massachusetts Hockey, 5-1
November 22, 2025 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 17/18 Massachusetts hockey pulled level with #16 Providence in the third period, but the Friars scored four unanswered goals to skate past the Minutemen at the Mullins Center on Saturday night. The loss leaves UMass at 8-7-0 overall, 2-5-0 in Hockey East, while PC improves to 6-5-2 and 4-3-1 in Hockey East action.
"We weren't playing a great game, but it was 0-0 near the end of the second period and made a poor puck decision to take an icing—faceoff, goal." Said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We came out in the third and actually started playing. We got a great goal from James Duerr. We started to get some momentum, and then their McQueen kid walked right through our defense and scored, things fell apart from there."
Late in the second period, Providence broke up a scoreless deadlock with a goal off an offensive zone faceoff win after the Minutemen had iced the puck. Aleksi Kivioja won the puck back to Julius Stumpf whose quick strike found its way into the UMass net at 17:38.
The Minutemen eventually pulled level with the Friars 4:35 into the third. Freshman Justin Kerr won a battle along the wall and kicked the puck out to junior Jack Musa who fed sophomore James Duerr on the opposite wing. Duerr spun towards the goal and found the top right corner of the net for his first tally of the season.
However, Providence regained the lead at the 11:02 mark. Will Elger sent a pass ahead to Roger McQueen who stickhandled his way around a UMass defender for the score.
The Friars added an insurance tally at 13:35 with Beau Jelsma cleaning up a McQueen rebound in the slot and Martin Massa collecting the secondary helper. Just 23 seconds later, Logan Sawyer finished off a wraparound attempt by Graham Gamache.
Quinn Mantei then capped the scoring for Providence with an empty net goal 17:37 into the final frame.
The Friars out-shot UMass, 45-20 on the night and the Minutemen were 0-for-2 on the power play.
Junior Jackson Irving made 40 saves for Massachusetts and Philip Svedebäck totaled 19 stops for Providence.
UMass will next travel to West Point, New York, to face Army on Saturday, November 29 at 4 p.m.
