#18/19 Massachusetts Hockey Drops 5-4 Decision At Army West Point
November 29, 2025 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Václav Nestrašil had a three-point night, but four goals in the second period helped Army West Point skate past No. 18/19 Massachusetts hockey, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 8-8-0 on the year, while the Black Knights improve to 4-8-3.
"The last 40 minutes, I thought we played great," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We did a lot of good things. Gave up some scoring chances in the first and, you know, Michael Hrabal coming back, we needed to let him ease himself back in the game. He had to make too many difficult saves, which, which he didn't make. But last 40 minutes, I thought we played pretty good hockey."
UMass opened the scoring with freshman Jack Galanek winning an offensive zone faceoff back to Nestrašil following a Black Knights' icing and Nestrašil feeding senior Owen Murray at the left point for his first goal of the season at 7:13 of the first period.
The Minutemen then made it 2-0, converting on their second power play of the contest. Sophomore Francesco Dell'Elce sent a pass over to Daniel Jencko on the perimeter and Jencko found Nestrašil at the far post for a tap in at 17:41.
Moments later, Army took the goal back as Nils Forselius skated the puck out of the corner and stuffed it past netminder Michael Hrabal in the final minute of play in the period.
The Black Knights began the second period by converting on the power play as Jack Ivey and Barron Woodring set up Ben Ivey for the tally at 2:43.
Army then climbed in front for the first time with Woodring feeding Vincent Salice on the rush at the 4:11 mark.
Junior Nick VanTassell tied the score at 3-3 with his second of the season, cleaning up a rebound from classmate Jack Musa and senior Lucas Ölvestad at the doorstep at 5:31.
Woodwing responded by putting the Black Knights back on top with a shorthanded tally, 17:42 into the frame.
Nestrasil picked up his second power-play goal of the day, tipping home a centering feed from Galanek and Musa at 18:04. However, Army would take a one-goal cushion into the break with Brent Keefer potting the Black Knights' fifth of the day at 19:57.
UMass had the majority of the scoring chances in the third period and had extended zone time with the extra attacker on but was unable to rally in the final frame.
The Minutemen ended the contest with a 38-22 advantage in shots on goal and went 2-for-3 on the power play, while Army was 1-for-2.
Junior Michael Hrabal totaled nine saves and classmate Jackson Irving made eight stops for UMass, while Jacob Biron logged 34 saves for the Black Knights.
The Minutemen will return to action next Saturday, December 6, when the squad travels to No. 11/12 Northeastern for a two-game set.
