Women’s Soccer Edges Out Rhode Island, 2-1

The Minutewomen earn their third consecutive victory.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer picked up its third straight win after edging out Rhode Island, 2-1, at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon.  
 
Massachusetts improved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while URI dropped to 4-5-2 overall on the year, including 1-2-0 in league play.  
 
The Minutewomen scored first only five minutes into the first half to make it a 1-0 contest. Graduate student midfielder notched her second goal of the season off a free kick that made its way through the crowd untouched into the back corner of the net. At the 18:59 mark, the Rams' Tierra Garniss tied it up at 1-1 with an unassisted goal.
 
In the second half, UMass took a corner kick at 73:41, as Curry sailed the ball towards the box. Graduate student defender Hannah Peric jumped up and headed the ball towards the top corner of the net to give Massachusetts a 2-1 lead in the 74th minute. It marked Peric's first goal of the season. The Minutewomen held off URI defensively in the final minutes to come out on top.
 
UMass outshot URI, 15-7, including nine shots alone in the second half. The Minutewomen placed six of their shots on target, while the Rams tallied five on goal. Massachusetts held the edge in corner kicks, taking six to Rhode Island's three on the day.
 
Five Minutewomen in Peric, Emma Pedolzky, Curry, Ashley Lamond and Bella Recinos totaled two shots apiece, with Peric and Curry placing both shots on goal.
 
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza played the full 90 minutes in net, stopping four shots with one goal allowed. Rhode Island's goalkeeper Abigail McCarthy finished the game in net for the Rams with two goals allowed and four saves.  
 
Massachusetts will hit the road for two league games, beginning with a trip to Washington, D.C., on Thursday, October 3, to face George Washington at 3 p.m. The Minutewomen then head to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a matchup with Saint Joseph's on Sunday, October 6, at 1 p.m. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
