Minutemen Win Third-Straight in 1-0 Nail-biter Over Brown

September 14, 2024 | Men's Soccer

Alec Hughes scores game-winner in 65th minute, Alex Geczy records third clean sheet of the season

AMHERST, Mass. – The Minutemen (3-1-2) extended their winning streak to three games on Saturday, besting Brown (1-2-1) in a 1-0 nail-biter at Rudd Field.

Alex Geczy tallied his third clean sheet of 2024, recording two saves to go along with stout defending against Brown's corner kick opportunities to break up multiple scoring chances. Alec Hughes netted the game-winner for UMass, scoring his seventh goal in four games and fourth on the week. Hughes stands second among All-Time goal scorers in program history (42), trailing only Jeff Deren '03 (48).

Breaking Down the Action
  • Both defenses set the tone in the first half, with UMass holding Brown to just two shots to the Minutemen's five.
  • Mike Willis earned the first scoring chance of the game for Massachusetts in the fifth minute, sending a header towards the right side of the net that was saved by Henrik Weiper.
  • Matt Cence launched a screamer to the top shelf in the 24th minute, forcing Weiper to make his second save of the half.
  • The Minutemen continued a steady attack throughout the remainder of the half, winning the corner kick battle 4-1 heading into the break.
  • Andrew Ortiz, Layton Purchase, and Aidan Kelly each put together quality scoring chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half, making Weiper work for three more saves.
  • Hughes put UMass in front in the 65th minute, nailing a free kick from outside the box in what would be the eventual game-winner.
  • Massachusetts would fend off eight corner kicks in the last 23 minutes of action, with Alex Geczy recording two saves including Brown's last shot on goal in the 76th minute by Lorenzo Amaral.
  • The Bears were able to create two last chances at an equalizer, but were off target as the Minutemen closed out the match for a 1-0 victory
