May 02, 2024 | Tennis

The Minutewomen look to garner their first all-time win in the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m.

STANFORD, Calif. – University of Massachusetts tennis looks ahead to their third NCAA Team Tournament appearance in program-history against No. 2 Stanford at Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m. EST.

The winner will face the winner of Baylor/LSU in the second round on Saturday, May 4.

After seizing their first Atlantic 10 Championship since the 2016-17 season, and first under the helm of head coach Juancarlos Nunez, the Minutewomen look to claim their first all-time victory in the NCAA tournament.

UMass looks to continue their impressive postseason run after garnering the 2024 A-10 title as the No. 3 seed. Receiving a bye into the quarterfinals thanks to their 15-7, (4-1 A-10) regular season record, Massachusetts shut out No. 6 Rhode Island, 4-0 to advance to the semifinals where the team bested No. 2 Saint Louis, 4-1. The Minutewomen closed out their A-10 run in the finals, triumphing 4-2 over No. 8 Richmond for the crown.

Nine of the ten Minutewomen hold winning singles records coming into the postseason, with four of the five doubles teams also holding the same accolade.

Minutewomen in the Tournament
UMass has made the NCAA Tournament twice, prior to this season. The Minutewomen's first appearance in the NCAA Championships was in the 2000-01 season, as the team collected its first A-10 Title after defeating the then No. 2-seed George Washington, 4-2. In its first NCAA appearance, Massachusetts took on Arizona State in the First Round.

The Minutewomen earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament for their appearance in 2017 under the helm of Judy Dixon with a 4-2 victory over the then No. 1-seed VCU in the A-10 Championship. UMass faced No. 1 Florida in Gainesville, Florida, in the First Round.

Scouting Stanford
The Cardinals are the most decorated program in collegiate and Stanford University history, capturing 20 of their possible 41 NCAA championships. Additionally, the team has been runner-ups in the NCAA tournament seven times.

Presently, the Cardinals own a 166-22 cumulative record in the postseason since the NCAA's present format established in 1982.

Stanford's 2024 NCAA Tournament appearance marks the third time of the last 15 tournaments that the Cardinal has received a seed higher than No. 5. The Cardinal's 2024 tournament campaign also signifies the 24th time that Stanford has hosted the first two rounds of play;  remaining undefeated all-time at home during this stretch.
