Massachusetts Baseball Tops Saint Louis, 5-2, On Senior Day

The Minutemen clinched a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in 12 years.
The Minutemen improve to 24-27 and 13-11 in the A-10 Conference, while the Billikens moved to 37-14 and 16-8 in the league.
Braden Sulliven led the way, going 3-for-4 on the day, including a double, with two runs and an RBI. Kevin Skagerlind, Mike Gervasi and Matt Travisano tallied two hits apiece, as Travisano contributed two runs of his own. In addition to Sullivan, Jack Beverly also recorded a double, while Skagerlind, Austin Burgess, Gervasi and Michael Toth totaled one RBI each.
Saint Louis took an early two run lead in the top of the second, but Massachusetts notched two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to knot it up a 2-2. Travisano led off with a single up the middle, before Sullivan hit a double down the left field line. Toth singled to the shortstop, allowing Travisano to cross the plate from third to cut the deficit in half. With two outs, Skagerlind singled to left field, driving home Sullivan to tie up the game.
The Minutemen pushed across two more runs in the fourth to claim a 4-2 lead. After a leadoff single from Sullivan and Toth taking his place at first after being hit by a pitch, Jack Peters had a sacrifice bunt to advanced Sullivan and Toth into scoring position. Skagerlind loaded up the bases after being hit by a pitch himself, before Burgess recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Sullivan. Gervasi, then, hit an RBI single to center field as Toth touched home plate.
One more run in the seventh aided UMass to a 5-2 victory, as the Minutemen defense held off the Billikens throughout the contest. Massachusetts started off the inning with back-to-back singles from Carter Hanson and Travisano. Sullivan hit an RBI single with two outs, sending Travisano across the dish from second to add to the total.
Robbie O'Connor (3-5) picked up the win for the Minutemen, allowing only two runs, four hits, a walk and striking out three in seven complete innings of work. Andrew Middleton earned his third save of the year, giving up only two hits and dealing three strikeouts of his own. Henry Litman (3-1) took the loss for the Billikens, pitching two innings with two runs on as many hits and no strikeouts.
Massachusetts prepares for the A-10 Championships, starting Tuesday, May 21 through Saturday, May 25, in Tysons, Virginia, at Capital One Park. Seedings and times will be determined at a later time.
