Baseball Falls To #3 Dayton, 4-1, In The A-10 Championship Opener

The No. 6 Minutemen take on No-7-seeded Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
TYSONS, Va. – No. 6 University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 4-1, to No. 3 University of Dayton on Tuesday night at Capital One Park. The Minutemen will face No. 7 Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m.
The Minutemen move to 24-28 on the year, while the Flyers improve to 33-20 on the season.
Kevin Skagerlind, Austin Burgess, Carter Hanson and Michael Toth all had one hit on the night. Skagerlind notched the lone run for the Minutemen, while Hanson registered an RBI.
Massachusetts and Dayton remained deadlocked at 0-0 through five innings, with a strong performance from both pitchers. Leif Bigelow struck out five batters through five frames, as he retired the side to conclude the fourth frame.
The Minutemen broke through first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Skagerlind hit a single, before stealing second with two outs. Mike Gervasi watched ball four to take his place at first. Hanson, then singled into the gap in right center field, sending Skagerlind across the plate. The Flyers scored a run in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI single to tie it up a 1-1.
Dayton recorded a two-run homer in the seventh inning to hold a 3-1 advantage. Another homer in the eighth helped the Flyers extend their lead and bring the game to its final score of 4-1.
Bigelow (4-3) finished his time on the mound with three runs, all earned, four hits, two walks and a career-high eight strikeouts through seven complete innings. Zack Given took over on the mound for one innings, allowing one run on two hits and dealing two strikeouts. Nick Wissman (11-1) walked one and struck out five in 3.1 innings of work.
