Baseball Drops Series Finale, 15-9, To George Washington

Sullivan records fifth home run of the season in the loss.

ARLINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 15-9 decision in the series finale, as George Washington University swept the series on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.
 
UMass fell to 22-26 on the year, including 11-10 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Washington improved to 29-22 overall and 12-9 in the league.
 
Jack Beverly tallied a team best three hits, while registering two runs. Kevin Skagerlind, Mike Gervasi, Matt Travisano and Michael Toth all followed with two hits apiece, as Skagerlind and Travisano both had a double. Austin Burgess also contributed a double, while Braden Sullivan clubbed his fifth homer of the year. Skagerlind led the team with a career-high matching four RBI with Toth batting in two runs. Travisano and Sullivan also totaled two runs each.
 
George Washington struck first, tallying eight runs in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth, Massachusetts scored five to make it an 8-5 game. With one out, Carter Hanson was hit by a pitch to take his place at first. Travisano followed with a double, advancing Hanson to third. A two-out walk put Beverly on first, before Toth hit a single up the middle to drive in Hanson and Travisano. Jack Peters was walked to load up the bases, while Skagerlind cleared the bases on a two-out, three-run double, sending Beverly, Toth and Peters across the dish.
 
The Revolutionaries added two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI triple and an RBI single to make it a 10-5 contest. The Minutemen scored two of their own in the fifth to close the gap to three at 10-7. Travisano led off with a single to left field, with Sullivan getting on first on a walk. Beverly hit a single to right field as Travisano slid home from second. Beverly, then, advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Toth was walked. With two outs, Skagerlind reached first on a fielder's choice as Sullivan headed home from third.
 
George Washington tacked on two more runs in the sixth to pull ahead 12-7.
 
UMass came back within three runs in the seventh to make it a 12-9 contest. Sullivan led off with a solo long ball over the left center field wall, marking his fifth of the year, before a two-out RBI double from Burgess scored Beverly.
 
The Revolutionaries had a three-run double in the bottom half  of the seventh frame to extend their lead ad come out on top, 15-9.
 
Andrew Middleton (2-2) had the loss for Massachusetts after allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out four in 2.1 innings of work. Benny Wilson (2-1) earned the win for George Washington, pitching two complete frames, and giving up two runs on as many hits, a walk and totaling one strikeout.
 
Massachusetts closes out the regular season with a three-game league series with Saint Louis at the Earl on Thursday, May 16 through Saturday, May 18. Thursday's contest starts at 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Friday. The final game of the series begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
