Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Saint Louis

The Minutemen shut out the Billikens, 6-0, in game two of the twin bill.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 8-3, in game one of the doubleheader, before claiming a 6-0 shutout victory over Saint Louis University in game two on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
The Minutemen improve to 23-27 and 12-11 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Billikens moved to 37-13 and 16-7 in the league.
Massachusetts closes out the regular season on Saturday, May 18, at the Earl at 12 p.m. on ESPN+. An 11-man senior class will be honored prior to first pitch.
Game 1
Saint Louis 8, Massachusetts 3 (9 Innings)
Matt Travisano and Braden Sullivan led the team with two hits apiece, while Mike Gervasi, Carter Hanson and Nolan Tichy followed with one each. Sullivan and Tichy both tallied an RBI with Sullivan, Hanson and Travisano scoring a run each.
Saint Louis got on the board first, tallying two runs in the opening frame. The Billikens added to their total to take a 3-0 edge heading into the fourth inning. The score remained through the subsequent inning before Tichy added an RBI single, allowing Sullivan to cross the plate to make it a 4-1 game at the bottom of the fifth.
Saint Louis answered back with a single to right field, extending their lead to four as the game entered the seventh inning. The Billikens continued to push ahead at the top of the eighth, adding a home run to their tally to make it 6-1.
SLU added a double, before the Minutemen notched two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth. The Billikens held off UMass to record the final outs of the game to cement an 8-3 win in the first game of the day.
Renn Lints (3-2) had the loss for Massachusetts, allowing five runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out two in 5.1 innings of work. Callen Powers relieved Lint, giving up three runs, with three earned and five hits in 3.2 innings on diamond.
Game 2
Massachusetts 6, Saint Louis 0 (9 Innings)
Kevin Skagerlind and Gervasi had two hits each, with Austin Burgess, Hanson, Travisano and Jack Beverly totaling one apiece. Skagerlind led the team with three runs, while Gervasi had a team-best two RBI on the day. Hanson, Beverly and Sullivan all recorded one RBI.
Massachusetts' offense got off to a quick star in the first, as Skagerlind led off with a single up the middle. Hanson, then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Skagerlind to score from second and take a 1-0 lead.
After a walk from Jack Peters and a single from Skagerlind, to start off the bottom half of the fifth. A balk helped Peters and Skagerlind advance to third and second, respectively. Burgess loaded up the bases after getting walk. Gervasi drove in Peters and Skagerlind with a single to left center field, extending UMass' lead to 3-0.
In the seventh, the Minutemen pushed across two more runs to pull ahead 5-0. A single through the left side from Beverly drove home Burgess, before Sullivan grounded out with Gervasi heading home. A sacrifice fly from Hanson in the eighth aided UMass to the game's final score of 6-0 for the victory.
Justin Masteralexis (5-1) received the win for the Minutemen, tossing seven complete innings and allowing only two hits, two walks and dealing five strikeouts on the day. Charlie Weber (2-3) had the loss for the Billikens, giving up a run on as many hits, walking one and striking out three in three innings of work.
