Baseball Nipped By Rhode Island, 5-3, In Series Finale

Beverly records double and three RBIs in the loss.
KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the series finale to Rhode Island, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
The Minutemen fall to 9-17 on the year, including 2-4 in the A-10, while the Rams improve to 7-17 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Matt Travisano and Jack Beverly led with two hits apiece, as Beverly recorded a double on the day. Travisano scored two of the Minutemen's three runs, with Austin Burgess plating one. Beverly added a game-high three RBI, while Mike Gervasi registered one hit.
With a scoreless game after two, UMass struck first in the top of the third to lead 1-0. Travisano singled with two outs, before Gervasi hit a single, advancing Travisano to second. Another single through the left side from Beverly brought Travisano from second to home to give the Minutemen their first run of the game.
Rhode Island tied it up at one a piece in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, but took a 3-1 lead with a two-run double. The Minutemen knotted the game up once again in the fifth, making it 3-3. Burgess took his place on first after being hit by a pitch, as Travisano stepped up to the plate and singled. A double steal put Burgess on third and Travisano on second. With two outs, Beverly drove in Burgess and Travisano on a double to left field.
URI reclaimed the lead, 5-3, in the seventh with a two-RBI double. The Rams held on to their lead throughout the remainder of the contest to take the series.
Leif Bigelow (1-2) had the loss for Massachusetts, allowing two runs, one hit, four walks and striking out two in two complete innings. Jeremy Urena (1-0) received the win for Rhode Island with a walk and one strikeout in one inning pitched, while Tommy Hughes earned the save, punching out three and walking four in two innings of work.
Massachusetts prepares for two midweek contests, beginning on Tuesday, April 9 with a the Beanpot Consolation game against Harvard. The game is set for 1 p.m. at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, hosted by Boston College. The Minutemen then travel to Fairfield, Connecticut, on Wednesday, April 10, to face Fairfield at 3 p.m.
