Massachusetts Baseball Takes Game Two From Rhode Island, 4-2, To Tie Up Series

Gervasi recorded a home run and a double in the win, going 3-for-5 on the day.

KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts baseball tied up the series with Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island with a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Gervasi went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and double with two RBI.
 
The Minutemen improve to 9-16 on the year, including 2-3 in the A-10, while the Rams fall to 6-17 overall and 1-4 in the league.
 
Gervasi led the team with a season-best matching three hits, including a double and a home run, marking his eighth of the season and 17th of his career. Gervasi also tallied a team-high two RBI and added a run on the day. Austin Burgess and Matt Travisano recorded two hits apiece and one run each, while Burgess contributed an RBI. Kevin Skagerlind and Braden Sullivan had a hit each, with Sullivan registering an RBI and Skagerlind scoring a run.
 
URI went on an early 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single and ground ball. UMass knotted up the contest, 2-2, in the third inning. With two outs, Burgess took first base after being walked, before Travisano singled through the right side, advancing Burgess to third. Gervasi doubled to left field, scoring Burgess and putting Travisano 90 feet from the plate. Sullivan hit a single to the shortstop, allowing Travisano to touch home.
 
The Minutemen took a 3-2 lead in the eighth, as Gervasi led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. It marked his eighth home run of the season. Massachusetts extended its lead in the top of the ninth, to lead by two. Skagerlind was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second with Burgess at the plate. Burgesss, then, hit a single through the right side, helping Skagerlind score to make it 4-2.
 
UMass' defense stood strong in the bottom of the ninth, as the Rams loaded up the bases with two outs. Sullivan recorded the final out of the inning with a ground ball to second with the Minutemen coming out on top, 4-2.  
 
Renn Lints (2-0) received the win for Massachusetts, pitching seven complete innings with two runs allowed on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Mikey Jensen closed out the game, going two complete frames and giving up two hits, a walk and striking out one to earn his first save of the season.  
 
Connor Grotyohann (0-5) took the loss for Rhode Island, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and striking out one.
 
The series finale between Massachusetts and Rhode Island is slated for 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 7.
