Baseball Falters In Game One At Rhode Island, 6-1

Minutemen and Rams prepare for game two on Saturday at 1 p.m.
KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts baseball faltered to Rhode Island, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Massachusetts and Rhode Island set for game two of the series on Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at Bill Beck Field.
The Minutemen fall to 8-16 on the year, including 1-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Rams improve to 6-16 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Mike Gervasi, Nolan Tichy and Braden Sullivan had one hit each on the day, including a double from Tichy. Tichy also scored the lone run for Massachusetts, while Kyle Hoog tallied an RBI.
After two scoreless innings, Rhode Island took the lead in the third, scoring three runs in the frame. The Rams pulled ahead, 5-0, in the fifth with a two-run homer, and notched another run in the sixth to lead 6-0.
The Minutemen got on the board in the top of the eighth, as Tichy led off with a double to left field. Tichy advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt with an error on the throw by Rhode Island's pitcher, Evan Maloney. Hoog hit a ground ball to second base, allowing Tichy to come across the dish and make it a 6-1 game. The Rams were able to maintain their lead into the final frame.
Sam Belliveau (2-4) had the loss for UMass, allowing six runs on as many hits and striking out a season-high five in six innings of work. Evan Maloney (2-1) secured the win, tossing eight complete innings with one run on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts on the day.
