Hanson’s Homer Lifts Baseball Past Over George Mason, 10-7, In Extras

The Minutemen recorded five doubles on the day, including two alone from Willi.

FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior Carter Hanson hit a three-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 10-7 triumph over George Mason University on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
 
UMass improved to 13-20 overall, including 4-6 in the Atlantic 10, while George Mason fell to 16-19 on the year and 4-6  in the conference.
 
Austin Burgess and Mike Gervasi led the Minutemen with three hits apiece, followed by Jack Beverly, Hanson, Michael Toth and Marc Willi with two each. Willi, Burgess, Matt Travisano and Toth registered all had a double with Willi recording two, while Hanson and Beverly had a home run each. Hanson led the way with three RBI as Beverly and Willi both followed behind with two, and Kevin Skagerlind, Travisano and Jack Peters batted in one run apiece. Beverly and Hanson combined for four of UMass' 10 runs, scoring two each.
 
After a scoreless first, UMass got on the board first in the top of the second. Gervasi led off with a single, before Hanson singled to center field. With two outs and two on base, Willi registered his fifth double of the season, driving in Gervasi and Hanson to make it a 2-0 contest. In the bottom half of the second, George Mason took a run back to cut Massachusetts' lead in half, 2-1.
 
The Minutemen offense continued to stay hot as they added a run in the third. Skagerlind took his place on first after being hit by a pitch, marking his 31st career hit-by-pitch, and stoe second with Burgess in the box. Gervasi was walked with two outs, and Beverly followed with an RBI single to left field to score Gervasi, extending UMass' lead to 3-1.
 
Massachusetts secured two more runs in the fourth frame, as Toth started off the inning with a single. Willi hit his second double of the day, placing Toth in scoring position. Peters laid down a sacrifice bunt, allowing Toth to cross the plate to make it 4-1. Skagerlind followed Peters with an RBI single up the middle, sending Willi across the dish and giving UMass a 5-1 lead.  
 
A solo homer for Beverly in the top of the seventh pulled the Minutemen further ahead at 6-1. It marked his sixth long ball of the season and marked his second consecutive game with at least one home run. The Patriots grabbed two runs in the bottom of the inning with an RBI triple and an RBI single.
 
With one out in the top of the eighth, back-to-back doubles helped Massachusetts to a four-run lead. Burgess double to left center field before Travisano doubled to left field to drive in Burgess and make it a 7-3 contest. In the bottom half, a three-run home run for George Mason put the Patriots back within one at 7-6.
 
George Mason knotted up the game at 7-7 in the ninth with an RBI single, forcing the two teams to go to extra innings. With two outs in the 11th frame, Gervasi hit a single before advancing to second as Beverly was walked. Zack Zaetta pinch ran for Gervasi as George Mason made a pitching change. Hanson cranked a three-run shot for his fifth homer of the year as Massachusetts reclaimed the lead at 10-7.
 
The UMass defense held off the Patriots in the bottom of the inning to earn the 10-7 victory.
 
Mikey Jensen (1-2) earned his first winning decision of the season for UMass, pitching two complete innings. He gave up one run on as many hits, a walk adn struck out one. Andrew Middleton received the first save of his career after walking one and striking out one in one inning of work. Owen Stewart (1-1) had the loss for George Mason, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing two runs on one hit, one walk and striking out four.
