Strong Pitching Leads Baseball Past VCU, 4-3

Lints strikes out six before Powers sealed the deal in the ninth to earn the save.
RICHMOND, Va. – Graduate student Renn Lints allowed 10 hits and recorded a career-high six strikeouts over a season-best eight complete innings in his start, while freshman Callen Powers closed out the ninth to help the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 4-3 triumph over VCU on Friday evening at The Diamond.
The Minutemen improve to 8-13 on the year, including 1-1 in the A-10, while VCU fell to 17-10 overall and 1-1 in the league. The win also broke an 11-game losing streak to the Rams.
Austin Burgess led the Minutemen with two hits, followed by Kevin Skagerlind, Matt Travisano, Jack Beverly, Nolan Tichy and Carter Hanson all with one hit each. Travisano had a team-high two runs, while Skagerlind and Tichy contributed to UMass' run total. Beverly, Tichy and Hanson all registered an RBI on the afternoon.
Lints (1-0) received his first win in his third start for UMass, going a season-best eight innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits, a walk and dealing a career-high six strikeouts. Powers earned his first career save, giving up one hit and striking out one in the final inning of the contest.
After three scoreless innings, the Minutemen struck first in the fourth. Travisano started off the inning with a walk before Tichy took his place on first after being hit by a pitch. Hanson singled to left field with two outs, scoring Travisano, while advancing Tichy to third. A called balk on VCU's pitcher, Christian Gordon, allowed Tichy to come across home plate to give UMass a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth frame, Massachusetts tacked on another run. With one out, UMass recorded back-to-back singles from Skagerlind and Burgess to sit on second and first, respectively. Skagerlind advanced to third on a fly out to center field, before Beverly singled through the right side, sending Skagerlind home to extend the Minutemen's lead to 3-0.
VCU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to left field, making it a 3-1 contest. Massachusetts took a run back in the eighth to pull ahead, 4-1. Travisano led off with a single, as Beverly hit a sacrifice bunt to move Travisano to second base. Tichy hit a single down the right field line aiding Travisano across the dish.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Rams tallied two runs on a solo homer and an RBI single, but UMass held off VCU to earn the 4-3 victory.
Gordon (3-1) took the loss for VCU, giving up three runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out seven in six complete innings.
