Travisano and Beverly put together multi-hit efforts with team-leading three RBI.
UMass moved to 3-10 overall, while Citadel improves to 13-5 on the season.
Matt Travisano and Jack Beverly put together a multi-hit effort with two hits apiece, which included a two-run home run from Beverly, marking his second long ball of the year. Both Travisano and Beverly added three RBI and scored one run each. Kevin Skagerlind and Austin Burgess also had two hits on the afternoon, including a double from Burgess. Burgess contributed three runs and two RBI, while Skagerlind crossed the plate twice on the day. Four other players touched the dish for the Minutemen.
The Minutemen struck first in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Back-to-back hit by pitched put Burgess and Travisano on second and first, respectively. Beverly singled to left centerfield to drive home Burgess to get on the board. In the second inning, Citadel knotted the game up at 1-1 with a RBI single.
UMass reclaimed its lead in the third, taking a 5-1 lead. Skagerlind started off the frame with a single up the middle, before Burgess doubled to left centerfield to help Skagerlind touch the dish. Travisano hit a RBI single to score Burgess to make it a 3-1 contest. Beverly stepped up to the plate and hit a first-pitch, two-run long ball, marking his second of the season, to extend the lead.
Massachusetts loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, as Burgess was walked on four pitches, sending Sam Hill from third to home. Travisano singled through the right side, allowing Jake Given and Skagerlind to cross the plate and pull ahead 8-1. Burgess came across home plate to add one more run to its total on a sacrifice fly from Carter Hanson to lead, 9-1.
The Bulldogs' tacked on a run in the bottom off the fourth inning with a solo home run and three more in the fifth, making it a 9-6 game. A RBI triple and a RBI double helped Citadel within one, as UMass led 9-8. The Citadel took an 11-9 lead in the bottom of the seventh, totaling three runs.
Jacob Terwilliger (0-1) received the loss for UMass, giving up five runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out a season-high three in three innings of work. Ethan Fewell had the win for Citadel, pitching 1.1 innings and walking one, while Maddox Webb earned the save, tossing two innings and dealing three strikeouts.
The series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, on ESPN+.
