Baseball Falls To Holy Cross

Minutemen prepare for three-games at Citadel starting on Friday, March 15.
Jack Beverly led the team with two hits with two RBI. Six Minutemen contributed a hit, including a double from Kyle Hoog, Carter Hanson and Nolan Tichy. Hoog had a team-high two runs, while Tichy tallied two RBI.
Holy Cross took an early lead in the first inning, but UMass tied the contest in the bottom of the frame thanks to a Beverly RBI. Hoog started off the Minutemen with a double to left centerfield. With one out, Beverly singled down the left field line to drive in Hoog to knot the game up at one apiece.
After a pair of scoreless frames, the Crusaders tacked on six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. Holy Cross added four more in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead.
The Minutemen grabbed four runs in the bottom of the fifth, as UMass saw three straight walks to begin the inning. With the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly pushed Braden Sullivan across the plate. Hanson doubled down the right field line to score Hoog to make it an 11-3 contest. Tichy hit a two-run double as Matt Travisano and Hanson crossed the dish.
In the sixth and seventh innings, Holy Cross added to their lead by batting in 10 more runs total to lead 21-5.
Mikey Jensen (0-1) took the loss for UMass, tossing one complete inning and allowing three runs on four hits and one walk. Dan Mateffy (1-1) pitched four complete innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking two and striking out two to earn the win.
Massachusetts heads to Charleston, South Carolina, for a three-game series with Citadel on Friday, March 15 through Sunday, March 16. First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m., before a 2 p.m. start on Saturday. Sunday's game will begin at 1 p.m.
