Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Bucknell

The Minutemen took game two, 8-6, after the Bison earned an 8-4 win in game one.
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA. – University of Massachusetts baseball split the doubleheader with Bucknell on Sunday morning at Shepherd Stadium. The Bison had an 8-4 win in game one, with the Minutemen coming out on top, 8-6, in game two of the day.
Nolan Tichy hit a two-run homer in the first frame, while graduate student Mike Gervasi recorded his first career grand slam in the sixth to aid the Massachusetts to its first win of the season in game two.
Game 1
Bucknell 8, Massachusetts 4 (7 innings)
Justin Blumenthal, Matt Travisano and Marc Willi tallied one hit each, with Travisano adding a run and Willi registering an RBI on a double. Kevin Skagerlind, Carter Hanson and Nolan Tichy also had one run apiece.
After Bucknell went up 3-0 in the top of the first, UMass got the bats going quickly, pushing four runs across the plate. The Minutemen held on to the 4-3 lead after a quiet second frame, but the Bison got the go-ahead run, tallying two in the third inning. Bucknell added to its total with three more in the fourth to secure the 8-4 win.
Robbie O'Connor (0-1) had the loss for UMass, allowing five runs on three hits, walking two and striking out three in three innings tossed. Dylan Terwilliger enters the game for one inning, giving up three runs on two hits, a walk and striking out one, while Leif Bigelow pitched for three complete innings, dealing three strikeouts.
Game 2
Massachusetts 8, Bucknell 6 (7 innings)
Hanson, Tichy and Jack Beverly led the way with two hits apiece, while Tichy had a team-best two runs and two RBI. Gervasi led the way with four RBI with his homer. Beverly registered two doubles on the afternoon, with Hanson hitting a double of his own. Tichy had his first home run of the season in the first inning, while Gervasi recorded the first grand slam of his career in the sixth frame.
The Minutemen led early 2-0 after Tichy's two-run long ball, before adding another run in the top of the fifth. Bucknell closed the gap to one, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Gervasi stepped up and hit his second home run of the season to bring home Sam Hill, Beverly and Skagerlind. Holding a 7-2 lead, Tichy touched the dish to make it an 8-2 game. The Bison had a three-run homer in the seventh, before adding one more run to bring their total up to six, but UMass held on for the 8-6 victory.
Justin Masteralexis (1-0) received the win in a 4.1-inning start, allowing two runs, three hits, a walk and striking out a career-high seven. Zack Given earned the save, tossing 0.2 innings, giving up only one run on two hits and striking out two.
