CHICAGO, Ill. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell to Loyola Chicago on Wednesday evening at Gentile Arena, 64-52. Stefanie Kulesza led the Minutewomen with 14 points while Kristin Williams added 11 and Lilly Taulelei chipped in 10.
Tori Hyduke finished with nine points to go along with a tied for season-high five rebounds while Taulelei added a tied for career-high with four assists.
Hyduke scored five of the first nine UMass points, including a baseline jumper that gave the Minutewomen a 9-6 lead with 6:08 left in the first. Hyduke and Kristin Williams combined for 10 of the first 12 points for the Minutewomen after Williams knocked down a 3-pointer to give UMass a 12-8 advantage. The Ramblers followed with a 9-0 run to take a 17-12 lead into the first quarter break. UMass shot 45-percent from the field in the first but committed seven turnovers while holding the Ramblers to 35-percent for the quarter.
Kulesza ended Loyola Chicago's run at 11 with her first 3-pointer to make it a 19-15 contest. The junior later ended a 6-0 Ramblers run with her second basket from behind the arc to make it a 10-point game. Loyola Chicago led 33-22 at the halftime break after shooting 43-percent in the frame.
The Minutewomen started 2-of-3 from the field in the third quarter but went on to make two of its next 10 attempts as the Ramblers extended their lead to its largest of the evening at 48-31. UMass held Loyola Chicago without a field goal for the final 2:41 of the quarter and trailed 49-36 after two Williams free throws to end the quarter. Taulelei scored eight of her points in the third on 3-of-5 shooting while Odenigbo chipped in four points and four boards in the frame.
Kulesza made it a 12-point game at 60-48 with under three minutes to play with her second 3-pointer of the game before knocking down another late. Kulesza finished with eight points in the fourth and went 3-of-4 from the field in the frame to finish the evening 5-of-7 from the floor.
The Minutewomen travel to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to take on George Washington at 12 p.m. in their final road game of the regular season. UMass concludes the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 28 with a 6 p.m. tip against St. Bonaventure in the Mullins Center.
