UMass Comes Up Short At George Washington, 59-55

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team came up just short on the road to George Washington on Saturday in the Charles E. Smith Center, 59-55. Stefanie Kulesza led the Minutewomen with team-leading marks in points with 16, rebounds with eight, and steals with four.
Alexsia Rose added 14 points to go along with three assists and three steals while Tori Hyduke joined Rose and Kulesza in double figures with 10 points while adding three steals.
Chinenye Odenigbo and Kulesza combined for the first eight UMass points as the Minutewomen trailed 9-8 at the 4:45 mark before holding GW scoreless for nearly three minutes. UMass took its second lead of the game on a Rose 3-point play to make the score 14-11 with just over a minute left in the first. The Minutewomen made three of their final four shots in the quarter to take a 16-13 lead into the first break while Rose and Kulesza each finished with six points in the frame.
The Revolutionaries used a 5-0 run to regain their lead at 20-18 with 5:53 to go in the half before Rose's second 3-point play of the afternoon put UMass up by one. The Minutewomen held GW to a 1-of-5 start from the field before the home team converted on four of their next five field goal attempts to lead 27-23. Kulesza and Rose combined for 21 points in the first half as UMass finished 40-percent from the field and trailed 29-25 at the midway point.
Hyduke scored six of her 10 points early in the third and finished with eight in the quarter, including a jumper to cap off a 12-3 UMass run to start the second half that put the Minutewomen ahead 37-32. GW answered with a 6-0 spurt to go back up by one as part of a 12-2 run that saw the Revolutionaires take a 44-39 with 2:27 to go in the third. Lilly Taulelei capped off a 7-0 UMass run with a 3-point play to make it a 46-44 game while both teams went into the fourth all square at 46-46.
GW opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run before UMass answered with a 5-0 stretch of their own to tie at 51-51 on a Hyduke jumper from Rose. After GW took a 54-52 lead, both teams went three-plus minutes without scoring before a 5-0 run from the Revolutionaries made it a 57-52 game with under three to go. GW went up three on a free throw down the stretch before UMass missed the game-tying 3-pointer out of the timeout with 12 seconds remaining.
The Minutewomen conclude the regular season on Wednesday in the Mullins Center against St. Bonaventure at 6 p.m. before A-10 Tournament play begins in Henrico, Va. on Wednesday, March 6.
