Elite Eight Bound! UMass Downs #11 Virginia 1-0 in Sweet 16 Clash

Alex Geczy tallies back-to-back clean sheets against top-ranked opponents
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Massachusetts men's soccer program (13-3-5, 5-2-1 A10) is heading to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2007, clinching a 1-0 nail biter over #11 Virginia on Saturday evening.
Senior net minder Alex Geczy recorded his 10th clean sheet of the 2024 campaign, tying Zach Simmons for the All-Time program record for most shutouts in a single season. This marks the second-consecutive shutout this postseason against top-15 ranked teams (#6 Penn 11.24, #11 Virginia 11.30). Saving three shots on Saturday, Geczy now has 10 saves across the last two games.
Defensive efforts by the Maroon and White dominated the pitch throughout the night, with UMass holding the Cavaliers to just three shots on goal and eight shots total. The Minutemen put together a complete effort on the offensive end as well, firing 13 shots with six being on goal. Matt Cence led the team in total shots with five on the evening. Aidan Kelly, Mike Willis, and Andrew Ortiz followed with two shots each.
The Minutemen punched their ticket to the next round in the 72nd minute of the match, as Matt Fordham sent a ball deflecting off of a Virginia defender to score the lone goal of the contest and give Massachusetts the 1-0 lead.
