December 07, 2024 | Men's Soccer
DENVER, Colo. -- The University of Massachusetts men's soccer program (13-4-5, 5-2-1 A10) fell just short of a trip to the 2024 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup, dropping a 3-0 decision on the road against (3) Denver (15-3-4, 8-3-1 Summit) on Saturday afternoon.
UMass tallied three shots on goal throughout the contest, as Aidan Kelly, Matt Fordham, and Layton Purchase each found a scoring opportunity. Senior Goalkeeper Alex Geczy saved four shots over the course of 90 minutes, saving three in the second half. The Pioneers were able to control possession however, pacing their way to seven shots on goal and six corners.
The Minutemen began the game with a strong attack, pushing the pace in the opening six minutes with waves of runs towards the Denver box. The Pioneers would earn a set piece in the eighth minute that was converted for the first goal of the match.
Massachusetts put on their press that had disrupted (6) Penn and (11) Virginia's flow of possession, however Denver was able to adjust and prevent the Minutemen from controlling the pace of play. UMass earned a corner in the 40th minute that resulted in Kelly's header on goal being saved.
In the final moments of the first half, The Minutemen surrendered a coner kick, leading to another set piece goal to make it a 2-0 game going into the break.
Alec Hughes earned a free kick just outside of the penalty area in the 48th minute, missing just high. Shortly after, Denver would score its third and final goal of the contest in the 50th minute.
UMass would produce two corners and three shots in the final moments of its season, however were unable to find the back of the net as time expired.
