Alec Hughes nets his 51st career goal, Alex Geczy earns clean sheet in home state.
Philadelphia, Pa. – Massachusetts (12-3-5, 5-2-1 A10) continued their quest in the NCAA Tournament, besting No. 6 Penn (14-4-1, 7-0 IVY) in a dynamic 1-0 finish on the road Sunday night.
The win lifts the Minutemen to their first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 2007, when the program advanced all the way to the Final Four.
Alec Hughes led Massachusetts to victory, garnering the game-winning goal and a team-high four shots – three of which on goal. The performance marked Hughes' 51st career goal in five seasons with UMass and 16th goal of the season.
Alex Geczy was an immovable force, saving seven shots to earn his ninth clean sheet of the season. The Newtown Square, Pa. native is now tied for second All-Time in most shutouts in a single season for UMass, trailing only Zach Simmons (10).
