Four Minutemen Find Net as UMass Shuts Out SJU

October 05, 2024 | Men's Soccer

Ivan Vrh records first career goal, Alex Geczy tallies fifth clean sheet of 2024

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Minutemen (6-2-3, 2-1-0 A10) extended their unbeaten streak to three games on Saturday, besting Saint Joseph's (2-8-1, 0-3-0 A10) in a 4-0 shutout on Alumni Day.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Geczy posted his fifth clean sheet of the season, saving a pair of shots on goal. Ivan Vrh scored his first career goal, adding an assist to Andrew Ortiz who tallied his third strike in two games.

Breaking Down the Action
  • Layton Purchase got UMass on the board in the fifth minute, striking one into the top-left shelf off an assist from Johan Feilscher.
  • Feischer attempted to follow up with a score of his own, forcing Lars Haavie to make his first save of the afternoon
  • Just over six minutes of game action passed before Vrh would double the Minutemen lead, making a sliding scoring effort to find the back of the net after a beautiful ball from Matt Fordham played him into the box.
  • Matt Cence tallied a shot on goal in the following attack, making Haavie work for another save.
  • Andrew Ortiz wrapped up an impressive week of play with his third goal in two games, cleaning up a shot attempt by Vrh to make it a 3-0 game.
  • Matteo Mazzotta recorded the first shot on goal for the Hawks as Geczy made the stop for his first save of the day to preserve the three-goal cushion at halftime.
  • Aidan Kelly added one final tally to the Minutemen scoring column in the 59th minute, heading a corner kick from Cence into the right side of the net.
  • Mazzotta tried to answer in the following run on net, but Geczy was there yet again to make the save and keep Saint Joe's scoreless.
  • Both sides slowed in pace in the closing moments of the match, with neither side able to record a shot on goal for the remainder of regulation.
