Women’s Soccer Picks Up 1-1 Draw On The Road At Duquesne

September 28, 2023 | Women's Soccer

The result marks the third straight game with a point for the Minutewomen in Atlantic 10 play.

PITTSBURGH – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team earned another point in the Atlantic 10 standings with a 1-1 draw at Duquesne on Thursday night at Rooney Field. The draw marks the third consecutive result for the Minutewomen heading into Sunday's matchup at home against Loyola Chicago.

The Minutewomen are now 6-3-3 overall on the year and 3-1-1 in league competition, while the Dukes move to 5-5-3 overall, including 2-0-3 in the A-10.

Junior midfielder Bella Recinos got UMass on the board first, putting home her fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute. Junior defender Juliana Ryan corralled a deflected ball on senior forward Emily McCormack's throw in, before passing it through a lane in the 18-yard box to Recinos. In the 43rd minute, the Dukes knotted up the contest at 1-1 with a goal from Brianna Moore.

Massachusetts and Duquesne each had a couple of scoring opportunities, but the defense held strong on both sides. With a little under eight minutes remaining in the game, the Minutewomen were down a player, but continued to hold off the Dukes.

UMass held the advantage in shots, 16-12, including shots on goal with eight to Duquesne's four. The Minutewomen also recorded seven corner kicks, while the Dukes owned two on the night.

Recinos led the team with three shots, including two on target, followed by Ryan and sophomore forward Nia Hislop with two apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza tallied three saves, allowing one goal through the complete 90 minutes. Duquesne's goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer turned aside six shots and allowed one goal.

UMass welcomes Loyola Chicago to Amherst, Massachusetts, on Sunday, October 1, for a 1 p.m. matchup on ESPN+.
