Women’s Soccer Scores Five Goals In Shutout Victory At Davidson

September 24, 2023 | Women's Soccer

The Minutewomen tallied the most goals this season, and the most since the 2021 year.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – A five-goal effort powered the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Soccer Stadium. The Minutewomen put up their highest goal total of the season, and most since scoring five in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on October 31,2021.

The Minutewomen are now 6-3-2 overall on the year and 3-1-0 in league competition, while the Wildcats drop to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the A-10.

Senior defender Hannah Peric and senior forward Lauren Robles scored their first goals of the season, while junior midfielder Emma Pedolzky notched her first goal as a Minutewomen in the win. Graduate student defender Fiona Kane recorded her first goal of her collegiate career in her 82nd career game, as senior forward Emily McCormack also tallied the first collegiate goal of her career.

Junior midfielder Bella Recinos registered a career-high two assists on the day, while senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza picked up her fifth shutout in the last seven contests, marking a career-best in shutouts in a single-season for the San Ramon, California, native.

UMass got on the board first in the 35th minute to make it a 1-0 contest. Awarded a free kick opportunity, Recinos curled the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box, as senior defender Hannah Peric headed the ball towards Davidson's goalkeeper, Emily Smith. The ball hit off Smith's fingers, sending the ball to the back of the net. Massachusetts took 14 shots in the opening 45 minutes alone to Davidson's three, placing nine on target.

In the second half, UMass notched four goals to extend its lead. Emma Pedolzky dribbled the ball towards the box, passing it quickly to Recinos. Recinos one-touched a pass back into open space with Pedolzky shooting from just outside the box and finding the bottom left corner of the net in the 51st minute to make it 2-0. About eight minutes later, Kane converted on a penalty kick, booting the ball straight back in net for her first goal, before Robles sailed the ball from the corner to the far-left post, where McCormack scored on a right-footed touch for the first of her career in the 69th minute to give Massachusetts the 4-0 lead.

Robles sealed the deal for the Minutewomen in the 76th minute with a right-footed goal after sliding into the pass from Chandler Pedolzky just above the six-yard box.

UMass registered a season-best 26 shots on the afternoon, with five from Emma Pedolzky and four from freshman forward Caroline Dickson and placed 16 of its shots on goal. Davidson totaled 10 shots, including six on target on the day.

Mendoza made six saves on the day without allowing a goal during her full 90 minutes in net. Smith stopped 11 shots for the Wildcats and allowed five goals.
UMass keeps rolling with A-10 competition, visiting Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, September 28, for a 7 p.m. contest on ESPN+. The Minutewomen then return home to host Loyola Chicago on Sunday, October 1, for a 1 p.m. match.
