Minutewomen record fourth straight shutout win on their home turf this season.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team recorded its fourth straight shutout victory at Rudd Field defeating Atlantic 10 Conference foe VCU, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon.
The Minutewomen remain undefeated, including ties, on their home turf, following the 2002 opening of Rudd Field, since both the 2021 and 2008 seasons, when the team won six consecutive contests. The fourth straight home triumph ties the program with the 2018 season, while the fourth shutout earned at Rudd ties the team with the 2015 season.
The Minutewomen improve to 5-3-2 overall on the year and 2-1-0 in league competition, while the Rams drop to 3-5-2 overall and collect their first A-10 loss to hold a 2-1-0 record.
After a scoreless first half, junior forward Chandler Pedolzky put Massachusetts on the board in the 64th minute. On a free kick, senior midfielder Ella Curry curled the ball into the six-yard box where junior defender Juliana Ryan tipped the ball closer the net. With one touch, Pedolzky sent the ball into the top right corner of the goal to break the tie. VCU had a couple of scoring opportunities in the final minutes, but senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza made incredible stops to bring the game to its final tally of 1-0.
VCU held the advantage in shots, 14-7, including seven on goal to Massachusetts' two. Dayton held the advantage in corners, 6-2, over Massachusetts. The Rams took 14 corner kicks, as the Minutewomen only tallied one.
Pedolzky registered three shots on the day, including one on target, followed by junior forward Ashley Lamond, who recorded two shots. Junior midfielder Bella Recinos and freshman forward Caroline Dickson totaled one shot apiece, while Recinos's shot went on net.
Playing the full 90 minutes, Mendoza turned aside a season-best seven shots without allowing a goal. She earned her fourth shutout of the year and the seventh of her career.
Massachusetts travels to Davidson, North Carolina, on Sunday, September 24, for a 1 p.m. matchup with Davidson on ESPN+.
