Minutewomen pick up program’s first win over the Orange.
AMHERST, Mass. – Junior defender Sarah DeFreitas and junior forward Ashley Lamond found the back of the net in the first half as the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team shut out Syracuse University, 2-0, on Thursday evening at Rudd Field. The victory marked the program's first against the Orange.
The Minutewomen improve to 2-1-2 overall on the year, while the Orange drop to 2-3 on the season.
DeFreitas gave UMass the 1-0 advantage quick, scoring her first collegiate goal in the three-minute mark. Lamond followed 13 minutes into the contest, taking a pass across from sophomore forward Nia Hislop, and notching her third goal of the season, to extend Massachusetts lead to 2-0.
Syracuse increased its pressure after the two early Minutewomen goals, but the Massachusetts defense held strong and shut down the Orange throughout the remainder of the game.
UMass outshot Syracuse, 13-7, but both teams recorded five shots on target each. The Orange owned the advantage in corner kicks with six to the Minutewomen's four on the day.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza earned her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her career, stopping only five shots in net.
The Minutewomen welcome Bryant to Rudd Field on Sunday, September 3, for a 1 p.m. match up on ESPN+.
