Massachusetts Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Dayton on Senior Day

Minutemen claim 13-6 victory over the Flyers in regular season finale.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball concluded its regular season with a doubleheader split with the University of Dayton on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Dayton secured an 8-5 win in game one, before UMass propelled past the Flyers, 13-6, in the series finale.
 
Following the split, UMass concluded its season with an over record of 14-35, including a 6-18 record in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton finished the regular season 24-32 overall and a 15-9 in the league.
 
Game 1
Dayton 8, Massachusetts 5

Nolan Tichy led UMass with three hits, including his 12th home run of the season, two runs and two RBI, while eight Minutemen contributed a hit. Kevin Skagerlind, Steve Luttazi and Carter Hanson all had one RBI, with Skagerlind, Hanson and Will MacLean scoring a run. Hanson's lone hit was his seventh homer of the year.
 
A two-out, solo home run to center field from Tichy put Massachusetts on the board first in the opening frame. Dayton knotted up the game in the second with a RBI double, before tallying three more runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Flyers added another run to their total in the fifth with a homer.
 
The Minutemen took back a run in the sixth inning, as Hanson led off with a solo shot over the right center field fence to make it a 5-2 contest. In the seventh, a leadoff home run helped Dayton extend its lead to 6-2.
 
UMass plated three runs in the eighth frame to get back within one. After Skagerlind doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, MacLean singled to the shortstop to send Skagerlind home. Tichy, then, doubled down the left field line, driving in MacLean, making it a 6-4 game. Tichy got into scoring position with Justin Blumenthal's ground out and crossed the plate on a ground out to the shortstop by Luttazi to close the gap to one at 6-5.
 
The Flyers notched two more runs to pull ahead, 8-5. The Minutemen were unable to rally in the bottom half of the inning, as Dayton secured the 8-5 win.
 
Taylor Perrett (1-7) took the loss for UMass, pitching six complete innings and giving up five runs on six hits, walking three and striking out a season high tying five batters. Nick Wissman (4-1) had the win for Dayton allowing only one run on two hits, walking two and dealing four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Anthony Hattrup earned the save with no runs, no hits, no walks and two strikeouts in one complete frame.
 
Game 2
Massachusetts 13, Dayton 6
 
Blumenthal led the way with four hits, followed by Skagerlind and Chris Pearsons with three apiece. Tichy and Hanson registered two hits, as well, including a career best two home runs for Hanson. Luttazi also had one homer on his only hit of the day. Hanson recorded a career high four RBI, with Skagerlind following with three. Tichy and Blumenthal both had two RBI on the afternoon. Hanson and Pearsons crossed the plate three times each, with Skagerlind and Hill contributing two runs to UMass' total. Three other Minutemen also scored a run.
 
UMass struck first in the first inning, as Skagerlind led off with a double. Skagerlind advanced to third on a ground out, before Tichy hit a double of his own to give Massachusetts a 1-0 lead. Hanson crushed the ball over the left center field fence to push two runs across the dish and make it a 3-0 contest.
 
Dayton homered to get a run on the board in the top of the second, but UMass grabbed two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. With the bases loaded, Hanson reached first on a fielder's choice, as Pearsons headed home from third. The Minutemen went up 5-1 on a RBI single from Blumenthal that allowed Skagerlind to touch home plate.
 
A two-run long ball got Dayton within two runs at 5-3 in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, UMass loaded up the bases with no outs. Skagerlind reached first on a fielder's choice to score Hill and pull ahead UMass ahead 6-3.
 
The fourth saw one more run in the top half from the Flyers, but the Minutemen exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Hanson recorded his ninth homer of the season to lead off and make it a 7-4 game. Blumenthal came around to score on a single to left field from Hill, before a two-run double by Skagerlind pushed Hill and Pearsons across the plate, extending UMass' lead to 10-4.
 
Massachusetts added another run on a RBI double by Blumenthal in the fifth, and both Dayton and UMass scored one run each in the sixth inning, as the Minutemen remained ahead, 12-5. A long ball from Luttazi in the seventh gave UMass a 13-5 lead, before a RBI single for the Flyers put another tally on the board. The Minutemen were able to record the final two outs of the final frame and claim the 13-6 victory to end the regular season.
 
Jack Steele (1-5) picked up his first winning decision of the season with an impressive outing for Massachusetts. Steele tossed 6.2 innings and allowed five runs, seven hits, no walks and dealt a career high 12 strikeouts. Jacob Wilson (0-1) had the loss for Dayton gave up five runs on eight hits, no walks and struck out three in two innings pitched.
