Four Minutemen Selected For Baseball CSC Academic All-District Honors

Luttazi, Pawloski, Tichy and Hanson earn the honor for the first time for their performances on the field and in the classroom.

AMHERST, Mass. – Four members of the University of Massachusetts baseball team were named to the 2023 Academic All-District Baseball Team, as announced by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday. Graduate students Steve Luttazi and Jack Pawloski, junior Nolan Tichy and sophomore Carter Hanson all garnered the accolade for the first time in their careers.
 
The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. To be nominated for the CSC Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA and must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Luttazi, Pawloski, Tichy and Hanson all advanced to the CSC Academic All-America ballot after earning all-district honors.
 
Luttazi, who is currently pursuing his Master's in Finance, has a .338 batting average this season, sitting second on the team. In 45 appearances, including 39 starts, the Franklin, Massachusetts, native has tallied 48 hits, with eight doubles and three home runs, 32 runs and 23 RBI, in 142 at bats. He holds a .458 slugging percentage and a .424 on base percentage. In the field, Luttazi recorded 71 putouts and nine assists with one error for a .988 fielding percentage.
 
Pawloski, a Lexington, Mass., native, is earning his Master's in Finance. He has started on the rubber in five of the 13 games played this year. The graduate student holds a 7.58 ERA with one win. Pawloski registered 19 strikeouts in 29.2 innings pitched and has combined for one shutout on the season. In his career, he earned seven saves, tying him for 10th all-time in career saves in program history, and had a season-best four in the 2022 season.
 
A native of Orono, Minnesota, Tichy, is working towards his Bachelor's in Finance. The junior has a .320 batting average, a .372 on base percentage and a team-leading .552 slugging percentage, in all 45 games he has started. He leads the Minutemen with 58 hits, including nine doubles and a team high 11 home runs, and a team-best 42 RBI. Tichy's 11 homers tied him for ninth in program history for the single season home runs record, while tying for fourth in the Atlantic 10 Conference with his total. In the field, he tallied 77 putouts and two assists for a .963 fielding percentage.
 
Hanson, a Bloomington, Minnesota, native, is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Accounting. The sophomore has started in 42 of 45 games played, and averages .283 with 45 hits on seven doubles, six home runs and 29 RBI. He also has a team-leading 33 total runs, and a .366 on base percentage and .440 slugging percentage. With a fielding percentage of .981, Hanson recorded 101 putouts and two assists this season.
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 7.
