Massachusetts Hockey Announces Addition Of Cameron O’Neill To Incoming Class

May 10, 2023 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has added 6-0, 183-pound right-shot forward Cameron O'Neill to its incoming class for 2023-24, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Wednesday. O'Neill, a native of Odenton, Maryland, was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, 143rd overall, and joins forwards Dans Locmelis and Aydar Suniev as the third member of the Minutemen's freshman class for next season.

"Cam was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the fifth round of last year's NHL Entry Draft, said Carvel. "Cam has always been a player that can put the puck in the net and is very effective from the top of the circles to the goal line. We feel that he fits our identity well as he is a highly competitive player that plays with an edge. He has the potential to be a power forward who can score similar to how Mitchell Chaffee did for us before signing with the Minnesota Wild."

After a prolific season that saw him put up 145 points in 71 games for Mount St. Charles Academy in 2021-22, O'Neill Joined the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and logged two points over six games.

In his first full season in Tri-City in 2022-23, O'Neill registered 28 points on nine goals and 19 assists and was +5.
