The Minutemen and Hawks set for the series finale on Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

PHILADELPHIA – Two five-run innings for Saint Joseph's University secured its 2-0 record in the series, as the University of Massachusetts baseball team faltered to the Hawks, 12-3, on Saturday afternoon at Smithson Field.

The loss moved UMass to 6-24 overall and 1-10 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 14-19 overall on the season, including 6-5 in league competition.

Will MacLean and Steve Luttazi led the team, both going 2-for-4 on the day, as Luttazi added two RBI and MacLean contributed one. MacLean also tallied two runs, with Zack Zaetta scoring one.

Saint Joseph's led off its half of the first with a solo home run to get on the board, before a RBI single gave SJU a 2-0 lead. The Hawks recorded a three-run homer to extend their lead, 5-0.

SJU added another run on a RBI single, pulling ahead 6-0 in the second inning. In the third, UMass secured two runs. Zaetta was walked at his at bat, before stealing second. MacLean knocked in Zaetta on a single to left center field, making it a 6-1 contest. Nolan Tichy saw four balls to take his place on first, advancing MacLean to second. Mike Gervasi loaded up the bases for Massachusetts after being hit by a pitch. Luttazi reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing MacLean to score the Minutemen's second run of the game.

UMass scored another run in the fifth, cutting the deficit in half, 6-3. MacLean led off with a single to center field, advancing to second as Gervasi walked. A wild pitch provided both MacLean and Gervasi to advance to third and second, respectively. Luttazi stepped up to the plate, hitting a RBI single to the shortstop, pushing MacLean across the plate.

Five more runs for Saint Joseph's extended its lead, 11-3 in the sixth, before adding one run in the seventh to claim the 12-3 victory.
