The Minutemen and Hawks prepare for game two of the weekend series on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts baseball fell 5-3 to Saint Joseph's University in the first of three Atlantic 10 contests on Friday afternoon at Smithson Field.

The setback dropped UMass to 6-23 overall and 1-8 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 13-19 overall on the season, including 5-5 in league competition.

Five Minutemen recorded a hit on the day, including Zack Zaetta and Will MacLean, who registered a home run each. MacLean and Zaetta tallied a RBI apiece, while MacLean led the team with two runs.

Zaetta opened the contest with a lead-off solo home run to give UMass a quick 1-0 lead. MacLean reached first on a throwing error in his at bat, before advancing to second. With Nolan Tichy at the plate, MacLean took off for third and slid home to make it a 2-0 contest on another SJU throwing error.

After a scoreless, two and a half innings, the Minutemen added to their lead in the fourth inning.  MacLean led off the frame with long ball of his own, marking his fourth of the season.

Saint Joseph's got on the board in the fifth on a RBI single, as UMass still held a 3-1 lead. A two-run homer added to the Hawks' total, bringing the game to a 3-3 draw. Another home run in the sixth allowed SJU to take a slight 4-3 lead, and a RBI single put SJU up 5-3 in the seventh.

Neither team scored in the remaining two frames, giving Saint Joseph's the 1-0 lead in the series with a final score of 5-3.

Sam Belliveau (0-1) went 1.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits, taking the loss for UMass with one strikeout. Wil McCausland (4-2) collected the win for Saint Joseph's, limiting the Minutemen to three runs on as many hits in seven complete innings with five strikeouts. Cole Stetzar allowed only two hits and struck out one of six batters faced to earn his second save of the season for the Hawks.
