April 16, 2023 | Baseball
Tichy records the lone Minutemen homer on the day for his fourth of the season.
UMass moved to 5-22 overall and 1-8 in the league, while Richmond improved to 16-20 overall, including 5-4 in the A-10.
Five Minutemen registered a hit on the day, including Nolan Tichy's home run, and a double each from Kevin Skagerlind and Mike Gervasi. Tichy led with two runs on the day, as five Minutemen came across the plate once for UMass. Skagerlind, Tichy and Gervasi talled two RBI apiece, while Carter Hanson recorded one RBI.
Richmond got out to an early lead in the top half of the opening frame, as a RBI double, a two-run homer and a RBI single aided the Spiders to a 4-0 lead. Massachusetts responded in the bottom half of the first inning, closing the gap to one run. A two-out single from Steve Luttazi gave life to the Minutemen bench, before Luttazi advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tichy saw four balls to take his place at first, as Hanson stepped up and singled to left center field, knocking in Luttazi. Gervasi doubled to center field to drive Tichy and Hanson across the dish, making it a 4-3 contest.
The Spiders extended their lead in the second, tacking on two runs on a RBI single and an advancement on a wild pitch. Richmond added two more runs in the third frame with a two-run double, pulling ahead 8-3. After three and a half scoreless innings, Richmond touched the plate twice more in the seventh to take a 10-3 lead.
UMass cut the score in half in the eighth, making it a 10-5 game, with Richmond still leading. Zack Zaetta led off with a walk, before a two-out long ball from Tichy brought Zaetta home along with him.
Another RBI single for Richmond made it an 11-5 contest in the top of the final frame. The Spiders totaled four more runs in the inning, thanks to a grand slam, to lead 15-5. In the bottom of the ninth, Skagerlind hit a two-out double to center field, pushing Kyle Hoog and Jack Peters across the plate to add two more runs to the Minutemen's total, but it was not enough as Richmond came out on top, 15-7.
Jack Steele (0-2) took the loss for Massachusetts, giving up six runs on seven hits, two walks and striking out four in two complete innings. Jeremy Neff (1-0) earned the win for Richmond, allowing only three runs on as many hits, walking two and dealing eight strikeouts in six complete innings of work.
UMass travels to Fairfield, Connecticut, on Wednesday, April 19, for a 3 p.m. matchup with Sacred Heart.
